Extra Info on instrument selections for beginners:
There are a maximum number of spots for each instrument in the band. Beginners will need to have 3 of their favorite options ranked by aptitude and interest. Aptitude tests will be held at the event at various tables, interest is up to the student (they can try as many instruments as they want to get a feel for it!)
Once the student gets all their aptitude tests ranked, they can come see me for their placement. Please know that placement is up to the director, but I will always help the student try to make the best choice based on their aptitude, interest, and the needs of the band. All 3 need to be in balance to have a great learning environment for all students and to make the band the best it can be. It is important to understand that part of a band director’s responsibility is to ensure their ensemble is as balanced as possible, meaning the director needs to have the authority to match the responsibility in regards to instrument choice/availability. Beginners will be encouraged to audition to new instruments later in the year in preparation for next year’s band. Beginning choices are:
See further below if their favorite instrument is not listed (it is likely on the year 2 list!)
There are limited exceptions if the student is taking private lessons or has a cherished family heirloom instrument.
This limited instrumentation for beginning band has a curricular purpose - with more student independence (skill, behavior, ensemble & practice habits) they gain more choice and options in the very near future (don’t worry, everything they learn transfers to the new instrument quite easily!) - The following year they will be able to audition for placement on different instruments (early auditions at semester 2 are possible, ask for details):

While there are still limited spots for each instrument, there are more instrument options for year 2 and beyond:
Please ensure to discuss with the director to have your instrument change or doubling approved
