ICS provides every Middle School student a laptop; parents simply have to make a 4500 ETB laptop deposit. However, if the student wants his/her own laptop, not an ICS laptop, he/she is allowed to bring a laptop within the guidelines.
For G6 & G7, ICS Requires a Chromebook which tend to be smaller in size and weight; screen sizes of 11” ,13” are recommended for durability and convenience. The Chromebook will be setup according to ICS standards which only allows the student's ICS google account to login to that Chromebook. No other logins will be allowed.
For G8, any type of laptop, within the specifications are allowed. In terms of Apple support, there is none here in Addis Ababa. The closest place for support is in Dubai (highly recommended) or Nairobi. Dell and HP have authorized dealers but support and parts are expensive.
ICS recommends Dell Chromebook 3100 11" for MS students; this model is built specifically for education.

My son/daughter currently has an ICS-provided laptop in MS, do I have to buy a new laptop?
No, current middle school students who are using an ICS laptop can continue to use ICS-provided laptop.
Can my MS student bring a tablet instead of a laptop?
No, ICS requires a laptop for school work; a tablet is a companion device that can be used along with a laptop if a student chooses but his/her primary school device must be a laptop.
What happens if my child’s laptop is lost, stolen or breaks during the school year?
You have to make a laptop deposit and a school laptop will be assigned.
What technical support will the school provide for personal devices?
ICS will continue to troubleshoot non-hardware related issues that students have with their laptops such as software installation issues, wifi connection issues and login issues. ICS will not support hardware issues or have spare parts for laptops such as power adapters, screens, hard drives or laptop hinges. ICS is exploring tech partnerships to have on-campus support from local companies to provide technical assistance for hardware.
Does this mean that students can use their laptops anyway they want?
No. All students will continue to sign in and be monitored on the ICS network according to the ICS Addis Responsible Use Agreement HERE and and abide by that agreement.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
