The school building located at 273 W Clay St, Cayuga, IN was built in 1873. At one time it gave two years of high school as well as the eight lower grades. The high school course was discontinued in 1904. In 1949 a fire destroyed the upper story and the grades were reduced to five. In 1957 it was abandoned as a school and became the Eugene Community building.
This building is now managed and cared for by the Eugene Township Trustee Office. The Eugene Township Community Room and the Township Office are housed here. Currently, the community room is used for Parke Vermillion Adult Education classes, shot clinics sponsored by the Vermillion County Health Department, other educational classes/workshops, and more. This room is available to rent for family gatherings, birthday parties, showers, etc. Nonprofits may use this room without a rental fee. Call (765) 492-6000 for more details.
The Township Trustee is, by law, charged with the responsibility of providing fire protection for the areas of Eugene Township not incorporated into a city or town. Eugene Township contracts with the Town of Cayuga and Cayuga City Fire Department to provide this service to the unincorporated areas of Eugene Township.
According to Indiana Code 23-14 the trustee is to provide and maintain cemeteries located in the township that are abandoned or not managed by a cemetery association. Currently, the south end of the Eugene Cemetery is the only cemetery managed by the trustee.
When a dispute arises between two landowners regarding placement and maintenance of line fences, the trustee is to make a determination according to Indiana Law 32-10-9.
Indiana Code 15-3-4 charges the trustee with destroying detrimental weeds within their township. Guidelines for notification to the property owner are set within the law.
The care and maintenance of the Cayuga High School Memorial is provided by the Eugene Township Trustee Office.
