What if the Cow Doesn’t Say Moo? Supporting Language Development Through Play

Participants will be able to...

  • Identify the first six Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities of the DIR/Floortime Model.

  • Describe how to support language development using the DIR/Floortime Model.

  • Summarize how to write language goals for play-based interactions.

Foundations: Supporting Pre-linguistic Development in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Participants will be able to...

  • Identify the core language impairments experienced by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and how they impact social-cognitive development.

  • Name the three main types of communicative functions and how individuals with ASD have both strengths and challenges in the use of language.

  • Describe the benefits of a developmental approach and treatment strategies that can be utilized to support communication in a naturalistic manner.

  • Outline the benefits of supporting both verbal and non-verbal communication in order to increase communicative intent.

  • Illustrate the correlation between relationships and communication.

Teaching Emotions: When a Picture is Not Worth a Thousand Words

Participants will be able to...

  • Identify the verbal and non-verbal milestones related to emotional comprehension

  • Describe how an individual’s relationship with a caregiver can impact social emotional and language development

  • Describe treatment theories and strategies for individuals who have difficulty forming meaningful relationships early in life

Name: Ashley Lyons, MA, CCC-SLP, TSSLD

Title: Speech-Language Pathologist

Bio: Ashley Lyons received her Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology from The George Washington University. She is currently the Speech and Language Therapy Department supervisor at Rebecca School and has extensive experience working with students aged 14-21. Ashley’s interests include supporting pre-linguistic development, addressing oral-motor, sensory and feeding needs, working collaboratively with families and providing early intervention services. Ashley is passionate about the DIRFloortime® model, working developmentally and sharing this information with others as a DIRFloortime® Training Leader through ICDL.

Title: Speech-Language Pathologist

Bio: Courtney Latter, MS, CCC-SLP, TSSLD has been a speech-language pathologist at the Rebecca School since 2014 and is an adjunct instructor at New York University. Holding an advanced certificate in DIRFloortime®, Courtney utilizes this developmental, child-led approach in her work with students with neurodevelopmental delays and disabilities. Courtney's passion within her field focuses on supporting language development for the purpose of social-emotional communication within an interdisciplinary model.

Title: Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist

Bio: Raquel Quiñones, MS, CCC-SLP, TSSLD is a bilingual speech therapist in New York City at the Rebecca School, where she utilizes the DIRFloortime® methodology to guide her therapy. She holds an Advanced Certificate as a DIRFloortime® provider. She earned her Bilingual Extension Certificate from Columbia University in 2014. Additionally, she is PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets trained. Raquel has a special interest in language development in bilingual individuals with Autism.

Bio: ToniAnn Gambella Loftus, MS. CCC-SLP/TSSLD has been working with kids with special needs in some capacity using a variety of interventions and methodologies for the past 14 years. She received her master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Seton Hall University and her undergraduate degree from Meredith College. ToniAnn has a special interest in feeding and hearing. She has been working in the DIR®/Floortime™ model since 2011. ToniAnn is expertly trained in DIR/Floortime and teaches coursework through the International Council on Development and Learning. Kacie received her B.S. in Communicative Sciences and Disorders and Psychology from Northwestern University in 2015, going on to complete her M.S. in Communicative Sciences and Disorders at New York University in December 2017. Kacie holds a Certificate of Proficiency in DIRFloortime® from the International Council on Development and Learning (ICDL).

Professional Continuing Education

All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance documenting hours of participation in their course and available professional continuing education credits. Please note that continuing education credit is only provided for direct seat time. Course preparation including readings, lectures, and mentoring is not included in the CE hour or credit total.

The course content is focused on a specific product or service (DIRFloortime® ) and there will be no mention of other products or services. ICDL does not receive any commercial support for this course.

Speech and Language Pathologists

Each individual workshop is offered for 0.15 ASHA CEUs (Various levels, Professional area). Participants must attend the whole workshop to receive credits. No partial credit available.

Skills Level: This Training is appropriate for occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, educators and mental health treating professionals of all skill levels.

As part of your registration, you were asked to share your ASHA account number. This is required for ICDL to process your ASHA continuing education credits. Our Continuing Education Department will complete and submit an ASHA participant form on your behalf at the conclusion of your course.

We also request that all participants complete a course evaluation form that will be received via email. This course evaluation is for ICDL and is used to help improve all aspects of our training program. Your feedback is valuable and we thank you for your time!
