Happy Easter Message from Miss Rutledge
Pasg Hapus
As we come to the end of a very busy and rewarding term, I would like to wish all our pupils, families and staff a well‑deserved rest over the Easter break. It has been a term filled with wonderful teaching and learning, with children making strong progress across the curriculum and embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm. A particular highlight has been the Year 6 residential, where pupils demonstrated fantastic teamwork, resilience and a real sense of fun throughout their activities. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school.
Enjoy the break, take time to recharge, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 13th April for another exciting term ahead.
After‑School Club Update
A huge thank you to all staff who have generously given their own time to run our after‑school clubs this term. Their commitment and enthusiasm provide our pupils with wonderful opportunities beyond the classroom, we are incredibly grateful for their dedication. Please note that there will be no clubs during the week beginning 13th April. New club information will be shared with families during the week beginning 20th April, with clubs restarting the following week. Thank you for your continued support.
Good Luck Miss Ellis
We would like to extend our thanks and best wishes to Miss Ellis, who will be moving on to an exciting secondment opportunity at Llanmartin Primary School. While she will be greatly missed by pupils, staff and families here at MPPS, we are incredibly proud that she will be able to share her expertise, passion and strong pedagogical practice with another school community.
Miss Ellis has contributed so much to our school, and we are deeply grateful for her hard work, dedication and the positive impact she has had on teaching and learning. Llanmartin are very fortunate to have her, and we know she will continue to inspire and support learners just as she has done here.
We wish her every success in this new chapter and look forward to hearing all about the wonderful things she will achieve. Keep in touch Miss Ellis!
A polite reminder about parking
To help us keep all pupils safe, we kindly ask parents and carers not to park on the school grounds at any time. For health and safety reasons, the school gates must remain locked at all times, vehicles on site make this difficult to manage safely. This includes after school hours when extra curricular clubs are taking place and whilst Stay and Play are using the facilities.
Please also ensure that no cars are parked in front of the school gates, as this blocks access for emergency vehicles and prevents staff from opening and closing the gates when needed.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep our school environment safe for everyone.
A Message from Newport City Council regarding acceptable behaviour on school site
Newport City Council will not tolerate violent, aggressive, abusive or threatening behaviour from members of the public. If this happens you will be asked to leave the building, the police may be called and you may leave yourself open to prosecution.
Any such behaviour will be recorded and shared across council departments. This may lead to the withdrawal of council services.

Last week, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable three‑day residential at the Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre and they had an absolute blast.
The excitement began as soon as they left school after morning break and boarded the coach. On arrival, the children enthusiastically hauled their suitcases, rucksacks, sleeping bags and a few treasured cuddlies to their dormitories before diving straight into the fun.
Over the three days, they took part in a fantastic range of activities including orienteering, canoeing, wall climbing, abseiling, bushcraft, forest walks, caving, archery and even a silent disco, where the teachers may have been the most enthusiastic dancers of all! The food was a highlight too, with hearty breakfasts, packed lunches prepared by the children themselves and delicious hot dinners after busy days outdoors. Glorious weather made the whole experience even better.
Evenings were spent playing football, hide and seek, or simply relaxing together before settling down for some quiet time in the dorms and then lights out.
The behaviour throughout the trip was exemplary. Miss Medhurst, Miss Shier and Mr Macey were incredibly proud of every single pupil. The whole class pushed themselves, tried new activities, conquered fears, and impressed the centre leaders with their positive attitude and teamwork.
It truly was a wonderful experience for all involved. A huge thank‑you to the staff who generously gave up their own family time to make this memorable adventure possible for the children.
Year 6 would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bethesda Baptist Church for delivering a fantastic Easter Explained session this week. The class were warmly welcomed into the church, where they enjoyed watching members of the Bethesda community perform a creative news‑style bulletin, sharing different viewpoints on the events of Easter Week. It sparked some brilliant discussion and thoughtful questions from the children - particularly the decisions made by Pontius Pilate.
The pupils were also treated to squash and biscuits while working through an activity booklet that helped them explore key themes from the Easter story. To top it all off, every child received an Easter goody bag to take home.
Diolch yn fawr iawn to Chris Thomas and the whole Bethesda team for giving Year 6 such an interesting and meaningful experience.
Thank you for Wear Odd Socks to School for Down Syndrome Day
A huge thank you to all our pupils, parents and carers for taking part in World Down Syndrome Day by wearing your wonderfully bright and mismatched odd socks. It was fantastic to see our school community embracing the message that it’s okay to stand out, be different and celebrate what makes each of us unique.
Thanks to your generosity, we raised £ 78.91 for 21 Plus, a charity that provides vital support for children and young people with Down’s syndrome and their families across Wales. Their work helps individuals reach their full potential through training, education, practical advice and by raising awareness of their specific needs and abilities.
Your kindness and enthusiasm make a real difference. Thank you for helping us support such an important cause and for filling our school with colour, joy and acceptance.
We were delighted to support Comic Relief last week, it was wonderful to see so many children coming to school wearing something that makes them happy. Brawddegau Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd
This week’s brawddeg bendigedig is Pasg Hapus! — which means Happy Easter. It’s a lovely phrase for children to use both in school and at home as we head into the Easter break.
To help build confidence with Welsh second‑language learning, here are some Easter‑themed words the children have been exploring in class:
Esgyniad
Resurrection
Croes
Cross
Siocled
Chocolate
Eglwys
Church
Hwyl
Fun
Oen
Lamb
Wy Pasg
Easter egg
Bunny Pasg
Easter bunny
Gwanwyn
Spring
Encourage your child to weave these words into simple Welsh phrases they already know, such as:
Dw i’n hoffi wy Pasg – I like an Easter egg
Mae’r gwanwyn yn hwyl – Spring is fun
Dyma’r oen – Here is the lamb
Dw i’n gweld croes – I see a cross
It’s a great way to build confidence, have fun with language, and keep Welsh alive outside the classroom.
PASG HAPUS PAWB ODDIWRTH CRIW CYMRAEG!

Managing Medication in School
In line with our Managing Medicines Policy, the school cannot give pupils any non–life‑saving medication. These medicines must be given by parents or carers at home, alternatively you can contact the school office to arrange a time to come in and give the medication yourself.
For safeguarding reasons, no medication should be put in a pupil’s bag or lunchbox.
Any prescribed long term life-saving medication must be handed straight to the school office by an adult, along with the consent and medical information forms and signed off by the Headteacher.
We ask all parents who have children with asthma to make sure their child has an in date inhaler in school.
Thank you for helping us keep all pupils safe.
Breakfast Club
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, we kindly remind parents and guardians that Breakfast Club admission runs strictly between 8:20 and 8:30am. For safeguarding reasons, children arriving after 8:30am will not be admitted. It is essential that pupils don't access the school site until 8.15am as nobody is available to supervise children on the yard at this time.
It is essential that every child is personally handed over to a member of the Breakfast Club team at the main doors. Please do not leave the premises until this handover has been completed. These procedures are in place to protect all children. If you miss the deadline for entry you will need to wait with your child and ensure they enter school through their allocated class entrance. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Timber Trail Installation
Safety Reminder: To keep everyone safe, we kindly ask that pupils do not use the Timber Trail before or after school. The equipment must only be used under staff supervision during the school day. Thank you for helping us keep playtime safe and fun for all!
Important Reminder regarding 'No Nuts in School'
We kindly remind all parents and carers that our school is a nut-free zone. This means that nuts and nut-based products must not be brought in snacks or packed lunches. Several of our students have severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can trigger life-threatening reactions. These allergies are not just uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous, requiring immediate medical attention. By keeping nuts out of school, we’re helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for every child. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in protecting our students’ health.
School Attendance
Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child. Our attendance target is 96.% for the whole school. Please see chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 95.9%. If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
