Pupil Brief:
Pupils were asked to consider how we could use MicroBits to encourage others to exercise through fun, interesting, and creative games.
Games needed to be designed to try and improve learner Health and Wellbeing.
We have recently had a new gym installed at the school and Health and Wellbeing activities have been a focus since our return to school in September. Learners were keen to explore this idea further.
Pupils were asked to plan their ideas on OneNote before beginning to write code.
Learners arrived at 2 ideas:
Year 7: a reaction game where pupils had to throw a ball / run towards the colour projected by the MicroBit
Year 10: a football game where the MicroBit would randomly display a skill or a number (number corresponding to numbers in a football goal)
Year 7 learners wanted to design a reaction game. They began by coding a reaction game they found online which we could eventually manipulate into the game they wanted to build.
The final project saw learners reacting to a colour (displayed by the MicroBit) and running to the corresponding colour in the gym. Learners made amendments to the time to make it easier / more challenging. The example below shows pupils performing an exercise at each 'station' (quite challenging), but others threw a ball at each station / made the effort to run there (less challenging).
Pupils decided to create a game where numbers were drawn onto a goal in chalk which became targets. Targets ranged from the number 25 (difficult) to the number 2 (easy).
Pupils had to kick the ball at the correct number when it was displayed by the MicroBit. The purpose was to engage younger learners in PE lessons by making the selection random.
Learners considered different skills when they could challenge.
