Create a Digital Thermometer
In this project, which can be broken down into several sessions, pupils will learn how to create a digital thermometer using Micro:bits.
Pupils will start out simply by trying out the thermometer function of the Micro:bit to measure room temperature at regular intervals.
Next, they will learn to use the radio function to send a temperature reading from one Micro:bit to a separate Micro:bit attached to a computer which will log the data. The temperature data can then be exported to as a CSV file for viewing in Sheets or Excel for further analysis.
Finally, the pupils will learn to attach an waterproof external probe to the recording Micro:bit in order to measure and record temperature accurately which will prove useful in a range of environments and investigations.
The first sessions in this project can be used from Year 3 upwards and can be easily adapted, for example, the pupils could stop after learning about and testing the radio and data logging functions depending on school resources and/or pupil skill level.
These sessions can also be easily adapted and developed to suit different topics - I have included a few suggestions in the Real Life Context document but I'm sure you can think of many more!
