Here’s a series of resources created by Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel and CISP Multimedia to introduce computational language and the microprocessor Micro:Bit to KS2 pupils. The pupils will meet BIT, a friendly robot who will lead them on an exciting journey by working through challenges, learning algorhithms and how to script code!
The aim of each session is to introduce the concept of coding to KS2 pupils by dealing with new topics connected with computational language within each resource. Each resource is in order and builds on the previous learning from each resource.
Resource Number 1
The main aim of this resource is to introduce the Micro:Bit and to explain what is a microprocessor. The robot named ‘Bit’ will then explain each challenge step by step and the pupils will prove they are ambitious learners through writing their first code script using the website Make Code.
Resource Number 2
In the second resource, the pupils will be learning more about computational language and how to use the Micro:Bit to stay healthy! As healthy and confident individuals, it’s essential to look after the health of our mind and body, therefore the challenge is to write a code script to make the Micro:Bit flash a light to a permanent beat in order to relax the mind and keep a constant rhythm for their breathing.
Resource Number 3
Algorhithms were introduced in this resource where the pupils could develop a light sensor. As ethical, informed citizens they will use the Micro:Bit to identify when the light level drops lower than a certain level in order to save energy.
Resource Number 4
The last resource contains a more challenging challenge to reinforce previous learning about coding and computational language. The pupils will be learning about variables in order to be enterprising, creative contributors whilst writing codes for the Micro:Bit to play a melody.
