Hwb security:
Multi-factor authentication
Multi-factor authentication
What is Multi-Factor Authentication? Why do we need it?
As the problem of phishing has increased along with its sophistication , it will be necessary to use a multi-factor authentication system (also known as a two-step verification process or two-factor authentication process) for any member of staff or governors to log into their Hwb account out of the school's trusted network. Simply put, this means that an additional code to your usual password will be needed when logging into Hwb out of school.
The multi-factor authentication system will be mandatory for all members of staff or governors (but not for learners at the school) across the whole of Wales who log into Hwb out of school from the start of March 2023.
How can you prepare for using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
To prepare for this transition to the MFA login process you can:
watch the following video which explains how to install and use the 'Microsoft Authentication' app on a smartphone or tablet.
download the 'Microsoft Authentication' app on to your smartphone or tablet so that you're ready for the change in the login process.
If you already have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone, follow this video
Remember:
MFA will only be required when a non-learner account holder logs into Hwb outside the school’s trusted network i.e. off-site.
MFA is not required when logging into Hwb in school.
MFA is an important security feature both for organisations and your own personal online accounts.
If you change your smartphone or tablet (which has the 'Microsoft Authentication' App on it) you will have to contact your school's Digital Champions to inform them. They will then be able to re-set the MFA setting. The 'Microsoft Authentication' app won't work on your new phone until you do this.
