SkillShops Growth - 2019-20b

SkillShops Growth Over Time

  • More SkillShops than ever before were facilitated by students!

    • Students facilitating SkillShops often work in campus departments such as Peer Health, Library, Learning Center, Writing Studio, and more.

    • SkillShops Student Leaders worked with El Centro, the Multi-Cultural Center, and the African American Center for Academic Excellence to collaborate on SkillShops and other programs.

Categories

Each SkillShop falls under one of three categories:

  • Academic Growth

  • Professional Growth

  • Personal Growth

96 different SkillShops were offered over the course of the year (some fell in more than one category).

Many were offered multiple times -- SkillShops facilitators offered a total of 167 SkillShops over the year!

Online SkillShops

Since Fall 2017, 641 badges have been earned through our Online SkillShops. Many people have earned more than one badge! In fact, 24% of people who earned one badge went on to earn at least one more.

Once a student completes a SkillShop, they are awarded a digital badge through Badgr, which they can share with their instructor or showcase on their portfolio or resume.

How Do Online SkillShops Work?

It's simple! Anyone can join an online SkillShop from the links on the Online SkillShops homepage.

Each online SkillShop is a little different, but they all have tutorials to help you learn about the topic.

Quiz-based

Some Online SkillShops consist of quizzes that are automatically graded. Badges are awarded immediately after completing the SkillShop successfully.

Assignment-based

Other SkillShops include assignments that are evaluated by a Librarian or facilitator. Badges for these SkillShops will be awarded within five business days for successful assignments. If you are a faculty member assigning Online SkillShops and have a hard due date, let us know at skillshops@humboldt.edu so we can help ensure that badges will be awarded as soon as possible.

What are badges?

Share your badge with your instructor as proof of completing online SkillShops.

Include your badges on resumes and professional portfolios to demonstrate that you have learned these skills. Be sure to include a copy or link to your assignment in your online resume to showcase your work. Employers like to see evidence that you actually can do or have done what you write down on your resume!

Our badges are hosted through Badgr, an open system that works across sites and institutions including California Community Colleges and Microsoft.

Badges FAQ

  • All online SkillShops can be completed in an hour or an hour and a half- some can be much quicker.

  • If you already know the topic, you can still earn your badge to share what you know. For example, if you already have a WordPress blog, check to see that it includes all of the requirements and then submit it to earn your badge!

Online SkillShops: Academic Growth

Information Literacy

The Research Basics and APA Citations SkillShops were the most highly 'attended' online SkillShops this year. At least five faculty members linked the SkillShops to their courses by providing incentives to students. Faculty are often looking for ways to support their students develop information literacy skills and these SkillShops, ranging from 1-1.5hrs in length, are simple ways to help supplement what is being taught in the curriculum.

If you are interested in assigning SkillShops to your students, you can add any of the SkillShops to your Canvas course via the Canvas Commons (search for HSU Library) or by contacting us at skillshops@humboldt.edu.

Digital Literacy

These three SkillShops are focused on helping students learn how to create digital media projects. There are many classes that ask students to create web pages or video projects but students can also develop these skills to prepare for their careers and build their portfolios. Each of these SkillShops requires that the student create a digital media project (website or video) that demonstrates that they have learned the SkillShop content.

Future digital literacy SkillShops will include creating virtual and augmented reality, basic computer skills, and more. If you have a suggestion or want to learn more, contact us at skillshops@humboldt.edu.
