1. Introducing the main idea:
The main idea is that body language and mathematical
language both define the universal accord that is the
natural unity described by a certain mathematical
formula. I call it the unity formula. This is an
exciting research result because it helps people
integrate the feeling body-mind with the rational
intellect.
2. The unity of nature is felt as total integration,
communion, coordination, competency, and peace with
yourself and with others.
Humans sense unity in their bodies and this sense
affects their perception. The claim is that by moving
the body to express in body language the same unity
formula that mathematics gives for unity is a way of
inducing the sense of unity with nature, the universe,
and God if you believe in God. Unity is everything,
the whole, and that of course includes God. That is,
if you believe God exists, then for you God is
included in the whole of reality.
3. Here is an example:
To help justify the claim, there is an account by
Orson Bean of a treatment given by the Reichian
therapist Dr. Ellsworth Baker, a treatment in which
Bean was required to lie on his back and put his legs
up in the air and imagine he was pedaling a bicycle.
He pedaled furiously for twenty minutes until he felt
his legs would fall off. This account is on pages
162-165 of the book "The Quest for Wilhelm Reich" by
Colin Wilson. Baker told Bean to keep pedaling. This
movement induced in Bean a warm and fuzzy feeling as
though (in his words) he had smoked "a stick of pot."
The movement of Bean's legs and feet, like the
movement of a bicyclist's feet as he or she races
along the street, is of interest. One can explain
away the euphoria by using the endorphin theory. But
is using a toxic substance or engaging in violent
physical activity necessary for a person to really
feel good? The unity formula discussed below helps
answer this question.
4. Consider a little theory:
Imagine yourself shrunken down to the size of an ant
and take as a reference point the pedal sprocket of
the bike. As you look out towards the right from the
center of the pedal sprocket, you see that the
peddler's right foot is moving counter-clockwise.
Turning yourself around and looking out towards the
left from the center of the pedal sprocket, you see
that the peddler's left foot is moving clockwise. In
his or her body the bicyclist feels these two
movements integrated. This same dual circular
movement is described exactly by the unity formula.
This formula includes a vibration of frequency omega.
The bicyclist, then, might be inadvertently applying
this very same unity formula. Even if every bicyclist
is applying this formula, certain preoccupations will
prevent the pedaler from sensing unity. For example,
The bicyclist must work hard in pedaling and the
bicyclist must be careful to keep balanced on the bike
and avoid being hit by oncoming traffic. The
attention required to ride a real bike is more than
the attention Orson Bean applied in pedaling an
imaginary bike while lying on his back on a mat in the
doctor's office.
5. Just walking can make a person feel good.
Just walking involves a rocking movement in the joints
of the legs. During walking there is also rocking
movement in the joints of the arms. This rocking is
felt in the pelvic sockets, in the shoulder sockets,
and in the elbow joints and knee joints. These
sockets and joints are well rounded and circular.
6. A vibration opens the door.
Any steady rocking movement is a vibration.
Substituting the frequently of vibration for the
parameter w="omega" in the mathematical unity formula
gives:
1= (Coswt+iSinwt)(Coswt-iSinwt)= 1= unity . This
suggests that any vibration felt in a human being can
stimulate the human being to have a "mystical
experience" or to feel the sensation that Bean
described. That is the sense of being merged with the
totality of being. In the vernacular people say it
"gives me a buzz", and makes me feel really good,
without any sense of alienation. In Beans own words:
The sky over the East River...was a deeper blue than
any I had seen in my life, and there seemed to be
little flickering pinpoints of light in it. I looked
at the trees. They were a richer green than any I had
ever seen. It seemed as though all my senses were
heightened. I was perceiving with greater clarity. I
walked home feeling exhilarated and bursting with
energy(1).
7. Understanding unity requires a clear understanding
of vibrations.
Even so, many persons feel alienated from mathematics
and mathematicians. My claim is, though, that human
bodies truly are mathematical. Human bodies employ
mathematical language and respond mathematically. And
this makes sense, since other physical bodies in
nature follow mathematical principles and move
predictably in mathematically precise ways. From the
preceding discussion we can predict that vibratory
movements make us feel good. After all, our lungs
vibrate as we breathe in and out, and our hearts
vibrate as they beat in a steady rhythm.
8. Regular vibrations make a healthy person feel
good.
One might even suggest that a healthy person feels
good and in tune with everything BECAUSE the heart is
beating regularly and the breathing is regular and
strong. The body is flexing regularly in response to
the heartbeat and the breathing. Add to this regular
vibration the rocking movements of walking or running
and you have even more reason to feel good if the
exercise doesn't exhaust you. Vibration, then, seems
to be the key ingredient that enables a person to lose
self-consciousness and the sense of alienation. When
this sense dissolves, the person loses his or her
sense of separateness from other persons and from
other objects in nature. This loss of
self-consciousness can help a person discover,
develop, and demonstrate a long-blocked or repressed
ability.
9. Vibrations are everywhere.
There are very slow vibrations and there are very fast
vibrations. Waves beating on the shore are slow.
Blue light from the clear afternoon sky is a very fast
vibration. The sun's white light is a sum of many
vibrations of different wavelengths and frequencies.
You can lie on the beach and hear the waves rolling in
and you can gaze into the bright blue of the sky and
feel the warmth of the sun all over your suntanned
body. Each one of the frequencies in these
vibrations, along with the frequency of vibrations in
your beating heart and in your expanding and
contracting lungs, can be substituted for "omega" in
the mathematical formula for unity. This is why, by
exposing yourself to all these vibrations, you make it
easier to sense the profound euphoria and peace that
Orson Bean sensed. You don't have to lie on your back
and pedal until your legs ache so bad you think they
are going to fall off! You don't have to engage in
violent activity or use a toxic substance. You can
just sense the humming, buzzing, vibrating universe
inside of yourself and outside of yourself.
10. Nature is full of healing vibrations.
Orson Bean's perceptions were changed, and his vision
changed. After his Reichian therapy under Dr.
Ellsworth Baker, Bean reported that the sky looked
much bluer and the green leaves looked much greener.
His sense of vision had been altered. One can
legitimately say that he was "having a vision." In
his quote Bean said that this treatment had done more
for him than six months of psychotherapy. But maybe
he could have gotten an even better treatment just by
going to the seaside every day and exposing himself to
nature's vibrational energies for an hour or two.
Moreover, nature's healing treatment is free.
11. Healing vibrations are everywhere but often a
person is paying attention to something else.
It happens that if you take ANY vibration or rocking
movement and evaluate the frequency of that rocking,
and you substitute that frequency for the "omega" in
the unity formula, you get a perfect fit. That is,
the unity formula holds true for any vibration. What
is the reason for this fit? The reason is the proof
of the formula itself. In other words, the
mathematical formula is ALWAYS true no matter what the
vibrational frequency is. In fact one can plug in the
frequency of vibration of the turning of the galaxy,
which makes just one revolution every 230 million
years. Or one can plug in the frequency of x rays,
which have a frequency of around one sextillion
(1,000,000,000,000,000,000) per second. The very
small frequency and the very large frequency work the
same in this unity formula. But humans can't sense
x-rays and humans can't sense the rotation of the
galaxy. Humans can, however, sense the warm sunshine
and the blue color of the illuminated sky. And in
their bodies humans can sense the rocking movement of
legs and arms as they walk and run. But in walking
and in running the human has to be careful not to fall
down and get hurt. To avoid being hurt while moving
requires vigilance. This vigilance often keeps the
human from being free enough from care to sense the
unity of everything and having a vision comparable to
Bean's vision.
12. The splendor of sensing unity and the associated
euphoria when one feels in accord with the universal
accord may make a person even think that he or she is
God, or that this healing vision is a gift from God!
If we are interested in sensing the unity of
everything, then we can lie on the beach and expose
ourselves to many different vibrations. These
vibrations include the blue color of the sky, the
rainbow spectrum of all the sun's rays on our tanned
skin and in our eyes, the sounds of the waves roaring
along the shoreline, and the vibrations of our own
beating hearts and rhythmically rising and falling
inhalations and exhalations. This exposure will open
us up to sense the unity of everything. We will relax
and feel no separation between ourselves and the rest
of existence. Thus, if there is any part of existence
that we've not noticed, in this unitive state we will
notice something we've never noticed before! It will
be like we have just been born, and come out of the
womb for the first time!
13. A clear understanding of unity truly brings
heaven and divine healing right down-to-earth.
Verifiable mathematics takes the place of mythical
angels and space-beings.
Let's consider why the unity formula is true. It is
proven true mathematically. In mathematics the unity
formula is proven true for any angle. It's proved in
many textbooks on trigonometry that (SinA)(SinA) +
(CosA)(CosA) = 1 It is also true that (SinA)(SinA) +
(CosA)(CosA) = 1
= (CosA + iSinA)(CosA - iSinA) where "i" is the square
root of -1.
To verify that these statements are mathematically
true, review complex numbers and trigonometry in the
appropriate textbooks.
For any frequency "w" we just make the substitution
A=wt and this gives the result.
14. Some infants discover the unitive way of feeling
good even before they ever talk any kind of sense.
For example, even before I could walk I enjoyed
rocking on all fours on my bed and humming. I would
rock on my bed for hours a day and hum. I called this
activity "hmmmma." "Hmmmma" was possibly my first
word. Is it an accident that the word "hmmmma" sounds
a little like the word "ommmmmm" and the word
"omni-present" that is the "gift of everything"? It
is natural to think of speechless divine innocents
rocking their bodies and vibrating their throats as
they chant "ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm." Humans have
repeatedly discovered the effect of rocking some part
of the body or the whole body and letting this
vibratory activity have the effect of making them feel
in accord with the universal accord many have called
God. But when a child is only a year or two old, he
or she knows nothing of all this verbal theory and
mythology. The little child is just sensitive. In my
own case the rocking and humming made me feel very
good, so that I kept doing it for hours at a time.
15. Nature communicates unity to us through a
speechless child's whole body movements, and through
the flipping or flapping arm or hand movements, but we
pay so much attention to faces and voices that we
don't get the message. Our attention is blocked by
convention.
Now that you understand a likely reason WHY some
children get into this habit of rocking their bodies
or flapping their hands, or doing something else that
is vibratory, you can see perhaps WHY so many
so-called "autistic" children do better with numbers,
and with colors in art and tones in music. Colors and
musical tones are after all, just vibrations. What is
difficult for the non-vigilant person to do is pay a
lot of attention to speech, because speech is more
than just a humming or a repeat of the same sounds
over and over as in a chant. People who grow up
talking and thinking are very vigilant. They pay a
lot of attention to the sounds of talking people and
their gestures and movements. These are more
complicated than just vibrations. And this turning of
the attention away from vibrations turns the vigilant,
verbal child away from the sense of unity. Thus, most
children, who do talk and socialize, soon have
forgotten all about the sense of unity. In the
popular vernacular, ordinary social consciousness
turns people away from being in accord with the
universal accord.
16. Mathematics, the language of physics, and the one
same symbolic language that is used by educated
persons in all nations of the world, enables us to
understand the universal healing message of unity and
peace.
This sense of unity is explained in terms of
mathematical language and body language. One doesn't
need to talk about some Person as God to be blessed by
this sense of euphoria and healing unity. After all,
the autistic children who gaze into lights and who are
entranced by humming or buzzing vibrations, or who
rock and vibrate their whole bodies or parts of their
bodies are not learning to be sophisticated and worry
about theology. They are just feeling good in a way
they have discovered for themselves the same way I
discovered it for myself. But people have had
difficulty understanding what causes autistic children
to spend so much time in such vibratory movement. It
seems clear that even though they can't explain their
joy in words, and use their mouths to tell us about
their euphoria, the autistics keep talking to us with
other parts of their bodies. We can witness the body
language and use mathematics to decipher the divine
message that is being sent both by autistic speechless
children and by more typical persons as they are
vibrating themselves while they are rapt in an
autistic or mystical trance.
17. Communicating the universal healing message to
conventional thinkers can be difficult.
Let's consider a right sociable person who is
relatively insensitive to this sense of unity because
he or she has learned to be sociable and vigilant.
For example, the bicyclist has to be vigilant so he
won't fall down or get in an accident. The walker and
the runner also have to be vigilant. Just remaining
balanced and upright takes a lot of body and brain
activity! Consider also the social interaction among
persons. Focusing on the other person's face and
gestures, as well as his or her speech takes a lot of
attention! Plus you have to remain standing.
Furthermore, one wrong gesture or remark can result in
your getting the brush-off or even being slapped or
bashed in the kisser. The point is that good
socializers have learned to be very vigilant, so that
they can't experience the sense of unity. Their brain
activity makes it very difficult. This is why
Ellsworth Baker had to really get Orson Bean to loosen
up his body and almost pump his legs off. Reich
called this muscular tension character armor.
18. Traditional old ways of sensing unity and peace
are not the new way of integrating the intellect with
the feelings and the mind with the body.
Well, of course, by smoking pot, or by engaging in sex
a young person can experience the loss of vigilance
and the shedding of mental and emotional armor. Reich
talked about this a lot. Mystics may talk a lot about
it, also. Even so, there is a great deal of
theological literature that is very sophisticated and
complicated. You have to work your intellect very
hard to understand modern theology. Moreover the old
sacred ideas are somewhat different from culture to
culture. Different teachers have worked up different
ways of understanding the Supreme. For example, the
Dervishes whirl and spin their whole bodies for hours
and sometimes they gaze at the sun. But if the "holy"
person stops being vigilant and loses the familiar
sense of being a named person who is separate from
other named persons, this person can't be out and
about mingling with people and avoiding accidents.
The "holy" person must be cared for by attendants or
disciples. When the sense of unity is strongest the
"holy" person doesn't talk or write at all. For
example the Avatar Meher Baba went for years without
talking at all.
19. Most all human eyes can lean to see the vision
that Orson Bean saw.
The eyes contain tissue that is very sensitive to
light. By gazing directly at the sun with both eyes
at once, the visual cortex and the brain itself is
exposed to intense vibrations of a high frequency and
a high energy. The Dervish has studied under a master
and learned how to receive light from the sun without
having his eyes damaged. By doing the spinning and
the gazing, the Dervishes open up to this sense of
unity that comes through sensing vibratory movements.
Unity is sensed best without being distracted by
various concerns such as driving a car, riding a bike,
walking, running, or coordinating their physical
movements with the movements of other people as in
talking in conversation. The "holy" persons are
permitted to apply the unity formula and they do this
with great enthusiasm and pleasure. But perhaps they
can't explain in clear language what this "holy"
activity really is. Consequently, there's a lot of
antiquated theology connected with it.
20. No matter what culture we grew up in, the
universal language of physics enables us to really
understand the divine sense and the healing presence.
Because there's no clear explanation of the "holy,"
most people don't bother studying much about it, and
even the people who are interested in this subject
don't ever get down to the nuts and bolts of it. Very
few persons have many "mystical" experiences. More
people feel the "holy" by taking some special
substance or by losing their sense of alienation
during their sexual encounters. But these activities
have been common for ages and ages, and by themselves
are not enough to build bridges between the different
nations and old religions so that more and more
persons can experience this unitive sense that has
remained a mystery for so long!
21. This new knowledge gives human beings a new
power.
So now we have a mathematical formula that shows how a
vibration makes a person sense the natural unity that
is the unity of everything and everyone. By
understanding this formula and applying it every day,
people will be able to position themselves to sense
the "holy" presence and become one with the "holy"
presence.
22. Regular exposure to sunshine is just one way.
Chanting and drumming are other ways. Doing "hmmmma"
is yet another way. Mathematical unity is the central
key idea.
It's not really that the Sun alone is "holy." It is
just that the Sun is a very powerful source of
sensible vibrations that humans can see in their eyes
and also feel all over their tanned bodies. This
makes the Sun a very good source of this sense of
unity. In addition to sunlight, the person can add
other vibrations, such as buzzing, humming, or
drumming instruments, and water sounds and other
inputs to the skin, the eyes, the ears, and other
senses. This just increases the chances of a person's
losing vigilance and having a mystical experience.
23. This understanding helps humans integrate their
minds and bodies so that there is no blockage anymore.
It is good to have an intellectual understanding of
unity, because this understanding helps us integrate
the sensing, feeling faculties with the thinking,
investigating, and reflecting mind. With senses and
feelings integrated with the intellect and the body
integrated with the mind, we become truly whole
persons and the sense of unity is greater than ever
before.
