About me

I was born and (mostly) raised in Budapest, Hungary. After completing my PhD and postdoctoral training, I joined the HSU Mathematics Department in 2005. My broad professional interests center around creating interdisciplinary connections between mathematics and biology, and these interests drive my teaching, research and service. I have been teaching a wide variety of lower- and upper-division courses at Humboldt State University, including Math 105 "Biocalculus" and Math 361 "Introduction to Mathematical Modeling" . I have developed, with the help of MAA's PIC Math Program, a project-based course that builds on industry collaborations. Currently, I am most passionate about giving students problem-solving skills and research experiences and mentoring them in how to translate these into marketable skills. For more on my teaching, please see my teaching page. My own academic research has focused on biochemical and mechanical cell signaling and I have also collaborated with Dr. Ethan Gahtan, a neuroscientist in the HSU Department of Psychology, on creating a graph-theoretical representation of the zebrafish sensorimotor pathway. Most of my publications are with student co-authors and I was the faculty advisor of several Masters theses in the (now extinct) Mathematical Modeling Option of the Environmental Systems Graduate program. In addition to various departmental and university-wide committees, I have been serving as a faculty advisory council member of the California State University-wide organization, "California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) since 2006. I am a BIG Sigmaa member and the 2018-19 Program Chair of the Bio Sigmaa. I am raising two children with my husband, enjoy trail running (when not injured) with my dog in the Arcata Community Forest, and swimming with the local Masters group. You can find me on LinkedIn and ResearchGate. Here is a link to my CV.
