Fluency is an important component of reading. Fluent readers can read in phrases adding appropriate intonation to their words. When a student reads fluently they are successful at decoding text independently and comprehension may be enhanced. Fluency practice is most efficient with short text read orally.

When a student reads fluently they are successful at decoding text independently and comprehension may be enhanced. Fluency practice is most efficient with short text read orally.
Instructions: Use the cards below for fluency practice. You may print them or use this site to have your child read the sentences.
Here are some suggestions about how to use these fluency cards:
• Model fluent reading of the sentences with good expression.
• Have your child time themselves each time they read the fluency cards. Their goal is to try to accurately read the cards quicker every round.
• Record the number of fluency sentences read in one minute. Help your child record their progress on a bar graph to motivate them as they visually track their progress.
• Have your child record and listen to themselves reading each set of fluency sentences.
• Students can practice reading these fluency sentences individually, to a sibling, to a parent, or friend.
