As a person who has played and watched various past media of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise since 2014 when it first came out, I can gladly say that the FNaF film was one of the best things I've ever watched in my life! The movie has some differences compared to the games, but the way the movie is represented fits so well with them. The addition of new characters in the movie such as Abby made a real interesting change to the games, and added upon lore within the original 6 games. It was a roller coaster ride of fun, that visually told a thrilling story of murdered children, their ghosts and revenge.
The story centers around Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson). He is a tired, traumatized man who has to take care of his sister. He also lost his brother earlier in his life. Mike Schmidt has various memories of how his brother was taken, and when he takes a job at Freddy Fazbears Pizza, he's shocked to discover he's connected to the place. His sister Abby (Piper Rubio) sees the ghosts of the past missing children who went missing in the 1980s.It turns out that his brother was one of these victims.
He brings his sister to the location to get the attention of the spirits he's been secretly stalked by in his dreams. He fights his way through the animatronics to save his sister from the spirits. Finally, using drawings, Mike's sister convinces the spirits to realize who the killer is and they take their revenge.
The way that Abby convinces the animatronics of who killed them, is through the use of images. This is the message of the film, that before we learn to speak, we get insight to understand the world through images, instead of words. Images tell stories, and we can use them to see and understand what's around us. It’s a great theme, especially considering that a movie is a story told mostly through images.
Director Emma Tammi uses various camera angles and movements to add tension and wonder to the FNaF movie. She uses zoom on a character Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) while she stares at pictures on the wall, she plays sounds of excitement and then screams to symbolize her trauma, as she learns the identity of who killed those kids. During the beginning moments of the movie, she has Mike Scmidt observed from a distance using cameras to illustrate that he can't hear or see everything in his dreams. He has no power in his memories while the spirits are haunting him in his own memory he's been trying to pursue. Tammi’s techniques are very effective in conveying how the characters in the film are feeling.
Overall, it was a fantastic film with a great reveal of who the killer was. I would absolutely recommend this movie, giving it a 5 out of 5 star review. Even if you never played the game, and if you are a fan of horror films, you will love it! And, after viewing it, you should check out the games as well.
