Throughout the year, many students go out of their way to help others and Steinert senior, Amber DeWitt, has been one of them. Amber worked with SAVE Animal Shelters in Skillman, New Jersey, for her project that will give the shelter animals more supplies that they need to survive.
The project Amber created is called SAVE A Friend to Homeless Animal Shelter. She wanted to go out and help with this project because she “just always had a passion for animals” and she has always wanted to help them. Her love for animals motivated this idea for this project and she brought it forward and took it into action.
For this project, Amber had asked the Steinert community, as well as others, to help with donations “as small as used blankets, towels, toys, food, or even reaching out,”. Many people helped by simply spreading the news around and helping to get the word out. During the two weeks that this project ran for, Amber said that they received “a lot of food, treats, toys, blankets, towels, collars, and leashes” for the animals.
Once the project was over, she reflected on the results and how she went through with planning it all, “I’ve been planning this since the middle of my junior year,” says Amber. Within this time, she has been able to plan everything for her project. After she leaves for college, she hopes that someone can continue this project. She also plans on “bringing it into college” along with her. Overall, she feels that this project was a great success. Amber says that, “I got a lot of donations and I feel very successful with all of the donations,”.
From all of this hard work, Amber got the honor of getting the award of Rotary Student of the Month from the Rotary Club for her outstanding community service work and dedication.
