Girls Tennis

Traditionally, Steinert Girls Tennis is not a sport that sees a lot of wins. It’s a hard game between those who just started playing and those who have been playing their entire lives. With tennis popularity on the decline in Hamilton Township and more tennis courts being turned into those exclusively for pickleball, how is the Steinert Girls Tennis Team faring this season?
It takes an enormous amount of courage to start playing a sport at the High School level, and even more to continue playing after many losses. The girls on this particular team have done both. This team has been in better shape than it has in quite a few seasons. The girls’ perseverance has led Steinert to come out 7th out of 18 schools playing in the Mercer County Tennis Tournament. Without the continued hard work from the girls and their coaches, Jamie Riese and Dave Wilson, this would not be possible.
The tennis season is not over yet and Steinert still has plenty of chances to take home a few more wins. So far, Steinert has won against Nottingham and Ewing, with individual wins in other matches as well. The season is already halfway over, but the team is still fighting hard to take home more wins for Steinert.
Playing against schools with so many resources is an uphill battle. While playing against girls with much more experience, it is difficult to stay positive. Tennis is as much a mental sport as a physical one, especially after losing so many matches. It is a struggle to keep one’s confidence. The point of this team is more than winning. It is about determination, growing, learning, and never giving up. Each of these girls demonstrates these traits on a daily basis, showing their opponents up in the inner fight every match.
