Puss in Boots was a thrilling movie that brought us back to our childhood selves. The iconic orange cat in stylish boots has reappeared before our eyes in the sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The story takes us through a plot with many twists and has an ending that is totally unexpected. With Puss in Boots being quite the singer, the soundtrack is also phenomenal. Catchy songs like “Fearless Hero” will be stuck in your head days after watching the movie. Overall, it was a great sequel, and one that left us wanting to see more.
The movie starts off with Puss finding out that he is in his last life. Being a cat means that he has nine lives. However, he found out the devastating news that he has only one more life to live. It is the fear of facing death that affects him throughout the whole movie. Puss then decides to go to a cat sanctuary and live a secluded life as a house cat. He becomes depressed in a life where he has to repeat the same things over and over again and has to give up his old life. However, he eventually realizes that he cannot be a house cat and is meant to be the hero we all know and love, Puss in Boots.
Additionally, there is talk of a map that will lead someone to get a chance at one wish. Puss teams up with Soft Paws, and his new friendly companion named Chiquito to find the wish. In order to achieve this challenge, he will have to face a multitude of villains, such as Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Big Jack Horner, and Death, who appears as a wolf in a black cloak.
There are a lot of meaningful messages that are portrayed throughout the movie. This includes struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, finding your true family, and the theme of trust. Puss can be seen suffering from anxiety because of his impending doom and this helps normalize having anxiety for the audience. At the end of the movie, he faces Death directly and shows that he is not willing to die without a fight. Puss in Boots has a panic attack after seeing Death and has to be calmed down by his dog companion. These messages even extend to the villains. Goldilocks tells The Three Bears that took her in as a kid that she is going to wish for a real family. This breaks the bears’ hearts, but they continue to help her find the last wish since all they want to do is make her happy. However, at the end of the movie she realizes that the bears are her true family.
In addition, the friendly dog companion they picked up along the way, who has been abandoned by his family and doesn’t even have a name, finds his true family: Puss in Boots and Softpaws. During this heartwarming moment, the dog finally finds his name, Chiquito. Throughout the movie, Puss In Boots teams up with his partner, Softpaws. However these two have a long history which includes both of them leaving each other at the altar because they were scared. However, at the end of the movie they reconnect and create a new family with Chiquito. They both never thought they would trust each other again, but they end up becoming each other’s greatest allies.
One of the most entertaining and heartwarming things in the movies were the cameos of other Dreamworks Animation characters. When Puss in Boots' life flashed through his eyes, we saw a glimpse of a beautiful moonlight scene with him walking with his iconic friends Shrek and Donkey. Similarly, at the very end of the movie Puss in Boots, Soft Paws, and Chiquito are seen on a boat as they are approaching the Far Far Away which is the place where Shrek and all the other Dreamworks Animation characters live.
Between the heartwarming messages and the appearances of other iconic Dreamworks characters, Puss and Boots: The Last Wish turned out to be one of the best movies released so far this year. This movie can be watched by all different ages since it has both underlying messages and is an overall fun watch. This movie shines more than its prequel and became one of our favorites in the franchise. The reason for the great success is because the movie hits several important themes. The pandemic has increased a variety of emotions for many of us such as the fear of death and struggling with anxiety. The movie faces these emotions head-on throughout the movie and helps people feel like they are not alone. We both agree that this movie would rank as an eight out of ten due to its action filled plot and its moving messages. We cannot wait to see what Puss in Boots does next!
