It’s no wonder why. While most other chatbots were predominantly robotic and produced unnatural conversations, ChatGPT produces natural conversations and responses that look like they were written by actual humans. ChatGPT has become such a great issue for academic institutions that universities and even high schools have begun implementing AI usage policies. 

Even outside of school, how should we use ChatGPT? Should we let it do our work, academic and non-academic, if it can? Should we only use it as a tool? Should it even be used at all? Although the answer will vary from case to case, for the most part, I believe ChatGPT should only be used as a tool. As ChatGPT mentioned, overuse of the program can lead to a lack of critical thinking skills. In tedious or monotonous tasks, such as searching through dozens of URLs for the right information, ChatGPT might be appropriate. It would save you time and you wouldn’t be missing out on any skill other than clicking repeatedly. Google and Bing have come to realize this too and have begun working on their own ChatGPT-based features. In more complex tasks though, ChatGPT should be used sparingly. If used correctly, even in advanced work, ChatGPT can give you the little boost you need to overcome an obstacle or the inspiration you need to finish your project. However, if you need this help for a school assignment, MAKE SURE TO GET PERMISSION FROM YOUR TEACHER! Plagiarism is not cool.
