Kanye West has been trending recently for anti-semitic and racially controversial comments. Most people know of Kanye, whether it be his music, his brands, or even his relationships. He has always been a subject of conversation when it comes to controversy and public backlash. During October, he garnered attention again in the media when he was seen wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt to his Yeezy Paris Fashion Week show. Celebrities such as Jayden Smith and Diddy tweeted about his actions and their feelings on the matter. He also made a comment about the late George Floyd, claiming that “the 46-year-old’s death was from fentanyl and not a police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes.” There was talk about the family possibly pursuing legal action, but nothing further has been heard.
Less than a week after Yeezy’s Paris Fashion Week, Kanye made some extremely anti-seministic comments online, which led to an even greater amount of backlash on his end. His comment has been the main topic of conversation as of late which has brought his Paris Fashion Week attire to light. Jamie Lee Curtis publicly tweeted, “The holiest day in Judaism was last week. Words matter. A threat to Jewish people ended once in a genocide. You are a father. Please stop.” He later went on to speak about it on different talk shows, but stood by his words and did not apologize.
Due to all of the drama, he is now having multiple companies he’s associated with cut ties with him, as well as having his music denied air time and even having his wax figure removed from Madame Tussaud’s. Companies from Balenciaga to Adidas to Gap have ended their relationships with him and made public statements condemning his comments.
For many years it seemed that Kanye, or “Ye” as he is now known, would say or do something controversial right before he released some new material. This attention getting technique often worked and led to him getting both attention and financial success. However, this recent string of events has many critics and fans wondering if he has gone too far. There is no denying his musical genius, but talent and fame does not give you a free pass when it comes to hate speech. As Jamie Lee Curtis said, “Words matter.”
