It doesn’t take much to see that Steinert has made some major changes in the past year, from COVID-19 protocol to the new vestibule by the teacher’s parking lot. But the biggest change here at Steinert by far was getting a new principal this year! Principal O’Neill is very excited to be here at Steinert, and do the best she can on behalf of students, parents, and teachers. Mrs. O’Neill grew up in Monmouth county and attended a regional high school around the same size as Steinert! While she was there, she was quite the busy bee, competing as an athlete on her school's swim team, and lacrosse team. She was also a member of her school debate team and student government. After high school, she attended Brookdale Community College before attending New Jersey City University. She also received an additional degree at Columbia University in New York to further her qualifications to become a principal.
Principal O’Neill wasn't always in education, before she was a principal, Mrs. O’Neill worked at DCPNP with teenagers in unfavorable positions. She spent her career working with these teens and noticed that in a lot of cases, if someone had done something a little differently, or gone the extra mile for this child, their situation would have been much less severe. This inspired her to become a teacher and go those extra miles herself. She became a twelfth-grade English teacher because she loved reading and writing. While Mrs. O’Neill was teaching, she was encouraged by the principal of her school to go back to college to become a principal herself. She went back to school at Columbia University and moved to New York with her husband to get her degree. Together they lived in New York for five years, and there she reached her goal of becoming a principal. Principal O'Neill decided to move to New Jersey from New York to be closer to family so the search for principal positions in New Jersey began. When she was looking for principal positions she made sure to pick a school not only similar in size, but with similar values to the previous schools she had worked at before Steinert. While there are a few differences between the schools, her previous school being much more diverse and less residential than Steinert, that hasn’t kept Mrs. O’Neill from looking forward to helping all of us here at Steinert get the most out of our education.
When Mrs. O’Neill isn’t busy at school, she is spending time with her two-year-old daughter Edie, who she has brought around to multiple Steinert functions. So, if you ever see them together, make sure to come over and say hi! At home, she and her husband have two more important members of the family, two dogs named Hazel and Millie. Mrs. O’Neill enjoys learning more about cooking and baking, going out to kayak, paddleboard, and of course, spending time with her wonderful family. She was looking forward most to her first Steinert pep rally, along with wacky races, of course!! Principal O’Neill has heard a lot about Steinert's winter concert so that was definitely on her list of things to enjoy. Principal O'Neill is over the moon excited to be here with us at Steinert and can't wait to see what the future brings while she's here!
With such a crazy year and a half due to COVID-19, a lot of Steinert traditions have been changed or done away with altogether. Thankfully, our Homecoming game was not one of those. The Homecoming game was on October 24, 2021, at Steinert's football field on Klockner Road. The game featured the Steinert Spartans varsity football team against the Hightstown Rams varsity football team. The Spartan home stands were packed full of spirit- students, parents, family, and alumni all dressed in green and white. The game started out with the Steinert choir performing the National Anthem, followed by a wonderful performance by the Steinert Dance Team.
After the first half of the game, each of the grades brought out their class banners. The freshman banner read, “It’s Time To Thrive, Class of ‘25”, the sophomore entry said, “What’s not to adore, we are the class of ‘24”. The junior's quote was, “The Finish Line We Can Almost See, Class of ‘23”, and last but not least, the seniors banner read, “I don’t know about you, but we’re feelin’ ‘22 (Seniors Version)”. After the class banners were brought out, the Homecoming King and Queen of the 2021-2022 school year were announced by senior announcer, Ryan Sinkleris.
Here’s a quick recap if you weren’t up to date with the candidates: for Queen, the nominees included Emily Andrusiewicz, Amber Bilinski, Kailey Connor, Peyton Nolan, Alexandria Petrullo, Lauren Shultz, and Brea Todaro. The nominees for King were Vaughn Belford, Aiden Gardiner, Tyler Kostin, Liam MacDonald, Tommy Peters, Connor Ranieri, and Owen Weber. Long time couple Brea Todaro and Tommy Peters were crowned Homecoming Queen and King. The crowning was done by 2021’s Homecoming King and Queen Matthew Miro and Chloe Alpert, who returned from TCNJ studying accounting and Rutgers studying psychology, respectively.
After congratulatory pictures were taken of the happy couple, Steinert Marching Unit took to the field with their field show “Music Royalty”. The return of this beloved Steinert tradition is a sign that only more good can come out of this school year!
