Tracy's HTH Learning Journey

About Me

My name is Tracy Hayward. I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Bermuda.  I am from a big loving family and I have three older sisters and one younger brother.  At the age of 27 I decided to go back to college and become a teacher because I believed that I could use my passion for teaching to make a difference in Bermuda’s youth.  Upon graduating I started my teaching career over 25 years ago as a Business Studies teacher. To this day I love teaching and I am very passionate about educating children.

In 2019 I was seconded to the Department of Education with the task of updating the Student Code of Conduct for the Bermuda Public School System (BPSS). One of the resounding changes that was articulated in all the focus groups I conducted was the need to change from being punitive to being a more restorative school system.  Based on this feedback, I started researching restorative practices in schools and I loved this approach so much that I took courses in restorative circles and restorative conferences to ensure that restorative practices could be implemented with fidelity in the BPSS.  In 2020 I was seconded to the Learning First Team for the Department of Education in Bermuda and that same year I also enrolled in an online Principal Certification course where I obtained a Certificate in Educational Leadership from Framingham University. I then was given the awesome opportunity to become a part of the High Tech High Educational Leadership Residency Program where I moved to San Diego in August 2022 to pursue this degree.  I am currently interning at Lemon Grove School District in the Student Services Department where I am loving working with the whole district.  As a part of HTH GSE one class I particularly enjoyed is EDU 615 Facilitating Adult Learning. As a part of this class we read The Art of Coaching by Elena Aguliar and The Listening Leader by Shane Safir.  The readings and discussions in this class have transformed the way I think about myself as an effective leader and I would recommend everyone who is aspiring to lead schools read these books.

I got married in 1996 and we have 3 beautiful children Sia, Seth, and Simeon.  When I am not working I am a very supportive mother who ensures that my children are supported in all aspects of their lives.  I love to cook and try new foods and restaurants and I consider myself a foodie. Growing up in Bermuda I love the ocean and love to take walks on the beach which helps to calm and focus me.  I also love to read and one book that I read every morning is the Bible because it motivates me every day to be the best version of me.
