Truancy & Educational Neglect
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES ARE FOLLOWED BEFORE BEING REFERRED TO THE COUNTY:
Emails from a No Reply email sent to parents/learning coach email address stating your student has been marked for at least 1 unexcused absence the prior week.
If unexcused absences continue, a 3 Day Continuous Truancy Letter is sent to the family to inform them of the childs truancy/educational neglect status and the repercussions of that. This letter may be sent alongside of the No Reply email if all unexcused absences were marked in the same week.
Attempted email/phone call made to parents to talk about attendance issues from MNVA's Family Compliance Liaison or a Teacher.
If unexcused absences continue, a 7 day Habitual Truancy Letter is sent to the family to inform them of the childs truancy/educational neglect status and the repercussions of that.
Attempted email/phone call made to parents to talk about attendance issues from MNVA's Family Compliance Liaison or a Teacher.
If no improvements have been made, the MNVA Family Compliance Liaison will be making a referral to the county.
By law, a student is considered truant after having 3 unexcused absences on seperate days. For students 12 and Under, this would go to the courts as an Educational Neglect case and likely open as a CHIPS case. If the student is 13 and older, the case likely would open in Juvenile Court as a Truancy case. Parents/Students will be notified via letter in the mail of truancy status.
