What is a Job Shadow? Job shadowing involves spending time observing someone as they work in a profession that you have an interest in. Observing for few hours will help to give you a sense of what that job is really like and can help you to learn whether or not that profession or career interest is right for you. All HHS students are being given an opportunity to go into the community and experience a career in which they are interested in.
Expectations:
Your shadow choice should be based on your career interest and should be something that you normally wouldn’t have contact with.
It is your responsibility to schedule your own job shadow. Mr. Sytsma will gladly assist you in scheduling a shadow should you need help to find a job shadow if you are having a difficult time on your own.
You will be able to spend a half day (3 hours) or a full day (6 hours) observing/shadowing someone who is employed in a career area that you would like to learn more about.
You are responsible for providing your own transportation.
The location of your shadow site must be in the West Michigan area (Ottawa, Kent, Muskegon, and Allegan counties)
The person being shadowed must be a full-time employee and someone other than a parent or close relative (i.e. brother, sister, step parent, grandparent, etc.)
You may not shadow at your current place of employment.
All job shadows must be given approval.
For the day of your shadow:
You are responsible to make up assignments missed in each class. If you are ill on the day of your job shadow you must contact the person you would have shadowed to let them know you will not be there. Your parent/guardian must also call the school attendance office to let us know you are ill and will not be on your shadow. Check in with Mr. Sytsma to discuss rescheduling.
As a job shadow participant you are expected to observe all safety rules and procedures at the location of your job shadow.
Your job shadow is a time designated for you to be an observer. You may not do any work or any simulated work. You may you operate any equipment while shadowing.
After your shadow:
Return your Job Shadow Agreement with a signature from the employee you shadowed.
Complete the Job Shadow reflection form. This form will be sent to you via email and is due within 3 days of the completion of your shadow day.
