What is Capítulo DeSoto?
Who are Los Conquistadores?
The Harrison High School Chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society is the Capítulo DeSoto de la Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, named for the Conquistador and discoverer of Arkansas, Hernando DeSoto. In accordance with the School Board rules at the time of its founding, the DeSoto Chapter exists inside Los Conquistadores, and to be eligible for the membership, a student must first belong to the World Languages Club of Harrison, AR.
The S.H.H. is a nation-wide organization for secondary students, with more than 2,000 national and international chapters. The organization was founded in 1953 under its English name. The name was changed to its Spanish equivalent in 1959. Los Conquistadores was founded in 1960 at the Harrison High School by Mrs. Virginia Kirby Nickels. The DeSoto Chapter was founded by Mrs. Nickels' suggestion by Mr. Richard Alan Young on September 15, 1970.
