What is Capítulo DeSoto?

Who are Los Conquistadores?

The Harrison High School Chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society is the Capítulo DeSoto de la Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, named for the Conquistador and discoverer of Arkansas, Hernando DeSoto. In accordance with the School Board rules at the time of its founding, the DeSoto Chapter exists inside Los Conquistadores, and to be eligible for the membership, a student must first belong to the World Languages Club of Harrison, AR.

The S.H.H. is a nation-wide organization for secondary students, with more than 2,000 national and international chapters. The organization was founded in 1953 under its English name. The name was changed to its Spanish equivalent in 1959. Los Conquistadores was founded in 1960 at the Harrison High School by Mrs. Virginia Kirby Nickels. The DeSoto Chapter was founded by Mrs. Nickels' suggestion by Mr. Richard Alan Young on September 15, 1970.

Purpose of SHH

The purpose of the Society is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote continuity of interest in Hispanic studies. The DeSoto chapter is dedicated to promoting a continuity of Hispanic studies and to promoting friendship with other nations of the Earth.

Classification: National and International Honor Society in the study of high school Spanish and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Inc. AATSP

Eligibility: To become a member, a student must have a high honor average in Spanish class at the time of the selection, or must have performed outstanding service to the curriculum, or the World Languages Club. Eligibility does not occur until the student has completed at least three semesters of Spanish study.

Awards: In the spirit of our mission, each year the SHH contributes more than $150,000 in awards to student members. The most prestigious of the awards are college scholarships and Student Travel Awards.

Fees: One time membership fee of $10.00 is payable at the time of a student's induction, and annual dues of $10 are assessed to finance the functioning of the World Languages Club.

Membership: Membership permanently lapses in a year skipped, and members pass from active status to associate status if they remain out of the Spanish Curriculum more than one year.

Members of the DeSoto Chapter of the SHH are automatically honorary members of Los Conquistadores (WLC), but members of Los Conquistadores (WLC) are not automatically members of the SHH.

For each issue, a selection committee will choose the most outstanding contributions to Albricias in the categories of poetry, prose, and art/photography. Winners in each category will receive a check in the following amounts in recognition of their contribution to the journal: first place ($250), second place ($100), and third place ($50)
