About Real▪IMagined

This inaugural fulldome film festival is presented by the HP Digitarium at the Pierce Planetarium and the team at the Moody Innovation Institute. Working closely with Paris-based Diversion Cinema, which oversaw the first immersive competition at the Cannes Film Festival this past May, we curated the selection of nine extraordinary fulldome short films by award-winning international artists.

These immersive films explore themes including dreams and memories and the intricacies of sudden shifts within life trajectories. The combination of amazing visuals with original soundscapes and music creates highly personal experiences within the viewer.

This four-day film festival, incorporating performances by noted poets along with HPHS musicians, is divided into two components: the first two days are dedicated to selected HP upperclassmen, with the weekend showings open to HPISD staff, HPHS Juniors and Seniors, parents, and community members. Our open weekend seats are highly limited, so please register for your tickets as early as possible.

Real▪Imagined wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, HP Arts, and the Moody Foundation.

THE MATERIAL OF MEMORIES

France  2021  5m15s

Directed by Léon Denise, Dorian Rigal

The visual journey of memories is possible in certain hypnosis or dream situations.

As an immersive film, THE MATERIAL OF MEMORIES provides the sensation of dream vision.

How does one visualize what is in the past or in the future?

What is absent from the present?

The film is a journey  - a mental journey - that uses all the scales of the human gaze to memories, from the infinitely large to the smallest invisible.

Program 2 - Inspired by the Future

SUBLIME

Colombia  2023  9 minutes

Director: Jorge Bandera

SUBLIME reflects on transcendence after death, inspired by the Law of Conservation of Energy and Einstein's theory of relativity. It delves into the perpetual transformation of energy through natural elements, suggesting that life heralds the commencement of a new journey. Infused with the essence of nature, it vividly illustrates how life symbolizes the outset of an extraordinary voyage, transcending the confines of existence.

SWARM

Germany  2021  10 minutes

Director: Maarten Isaãk de Heer

Swarming is a behavioral phenomenon to survive, but more than often, it is a prelude to extinction.

Fly with the flock as they travel from Germany, over the Alps, to the Mediterranean Sea. Small birds migrate over exhausted and exploited landscapes. Robins, tits and sparrows do not usually migrate this far, but in a near future, they might.

Swarm offers a bird’s eye view over landscapes of three-dimensional photocollages that show a part of Europe after climate change.

INTERRUPTED TRAJECTORIES

Canada  2024  3m56s

Director: Lydia Yakonowsky

In her second short film, Lydia Yakonowsky delves into the intricacies of sudden and involuntary shifts within projected life trajectories, mirroring the unpredictability of economic forecasting. Through a captivating visual narrative, she intertwines a succession of scattered data point and unnerving spirals, evoking a sense of change, disarray and flux, reflecting not only the dynamic nature of economic analysis but also how forecasting errors mirror the sudden shifts and complexities of real-life changes.

ENTROPY

Director: Limelight

Entropy is structured as a journey through the evolution of life, transitioning across a range of ecological levels in a series of interconnected chapters. LULLABY is a Ukrainian nursery rhyme. All the film’s graphics are made using neural networks.

“The Dream Passes by the Windows”

The Dream passes by the window,

And Sleep by the fence.

The Dream asks Sleep:

"Where should we rest tonight?"

Where the cottage is warm,

Where the tot is tiny,

There we will go,

And rock the child to sleep.

There we will sleep,

and will sing to the child:

Sleep, sleep, my little falcon,

Sleep, sleep, my little dove.
