Family Commitments

HPA is a family activity and requires a parent commitment when students are involved. A wide variety of options are available. Before committing to HPA participation, please take time to read the details of a variety of parent commitment options. You will need to provide three possibilities when completing your form prior to audition day. A brief description of each committee is below. Use the links to view the detailed commitment.

Parents desiring to serve 50% or more of rehearsal time from September through Show Week should choose one of these committees. View detailed information about each committee here.

Costumes Creative Leadership - Artistic, Sewing, and Communication skills are needed as you obtain and oversee creative vision from directors and meet deadlines. Organize and communicate with sewing committee for at-home vs. rehearsal work. Organize and communicate "finding" needs to non-sewing committee. Work with directors throughout rehearsals to maintain artistic vision. 1 parent needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Costumes Organizational Leadership - Detail-oriented, Organization, and Communication skills are needed as you assign committee tasks and communicate with committee to fit, create, procure, organize and store costumes. Adhere to budget, keep records, meet return deadlines and organize strike plan. 1 parent needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Costumes (Sewing) - Sewing skills are necessary as you work at rehearsals (and sometimes at home) with costumes as advised by costume leadership. 3-7 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Costumes (Non-Sewing) - No sewing skills needed, just a willingness to following instructions and learn as you gather, sort, borrow, purchase, glue, cut, or decorate costumes as directed by costume leadership. May involve driving locally at personal expense. 3-7 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Hair/Makeup AND Costume Communication Liaison - Communication skills and a willingness to learn will be helpful as you facilitate good communication in areas of overlap between the costume and hair/makeup committees and be involved "part-time" with both. Assist Costume Committee at two rehearsals per month to help as needed, prior to Hair/Makeup responsibilities beginning when you switch to assist the leader there. Rehearsal Coordinator - People serving in this position should be detail-oriented, organized, communicators, and enjoys student interaction. You will staff the check-in table at rehearsal during 50-60% percent of rehearsal time. While there you will: track rehearsal attendance and people in building, manage lost and found, complete various money-related tasks (deposits and reimbursements), manage receipt of various items from cast (dossiers, makeup kits, DVD orders, etc.), manage student rehearsal cleanup committee, maintain emergency documents, communicate cast announcements to staff, and other detail-oriented duties. Scrip Committee - Detail-oriented people who enjoy working with numbers, are comfortable managing money, and have excellent computer skills will enjoy this position as you assist with accepting and processing orders from HPA families during the designated rehearsal time. Assist with rehearsal monitoring as needed. During 3 performances, each committee member will assist in the box office for an hour prior to show and selling concessions during intermission. 2-3 parents are needed per show. Rehearsal Accompanist - An accomplished pianist is needed to assist directors and choreographers at most rehearsals and during tech and show weeks at theater. May or may not play in the pit. Must be available during tech and show week rehearsals. Requires a high level of proficiency on the piano. 1-2 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Choreographer - Skills in dance creation and teaching are necessary. Must have choreography or dance background. Creates and teaches choreography to cast. 1-3 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Parents desiring to serve mostly outside of rehearsal times (often evenings and weekends) mostly during the months leading up to show should choose one of these committees.

Props Leadership - Resourceful, thrifty, communication, detail-oriented people meet with directors to obtain creative vision for time period, themes, etc. Communicate needs/deadlines with props committee. Obtain necessary "rehearsal props" early in the year. Maintain records and plan strike. Organize the returning of props to various venues and people. 1-3 parents needed per show. Props - Resourceful, thrifty, artistic people to obtain and return props needed as advised by props leadership. Bring props to later rehearsals as advised. 2-5 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Sets and Painting Organizational Leadership - Communication and organizational skills are necessary to assist in communication with Sets leader, Painting leader, and both committees. This is a person who would like to work "part-time" on both committees, helping to notice areas of overlap and where communication is necessary. 1 parent needed per show. Sets Creative Leadership - Organization, construction, and communication skills are needed as you obtain and oversee creative vision from directors, work with Sets/Painting Organizational Leader, set and meet deadlines, find construction location, assign tasks, obtain and purchase materials. Ensure daily cleaning of supplies and work area tech and show weeks, oversee removal of all items after show and their timely return. 1 parent needed per show. Painting Creative Leadership - Artistic and painting skills are necessary as you meet with directors to determine a plan to paint sets and backdrops. Work with Set/Painting Organizational Leader to assign tasks and provide direction. Secure a location for painting backdrops, manage budget, procure and purchase materials. Hang backdrops at theater, cleanup daily, and remove materials at strike and arrange for their return. 1 parent needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Sets - A willingness to learn set building is crucial in helping to create sets in evenings and on weekends, two-to-three months prior to show. Load in, construct, and load out at theater during tech and show weeks. 5-10 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Painting - Painting skills are helpful, but not necessary as you paint sets and backdrops within a few months of show, cleanup, touch up, and help with strike as needed. 4-10 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Parents desiring to concentrate your work hours into mostly tech and show weeks (generally requires 2 adults, 1 of whom will be quite busy during those 3 weeks) should choose one of these committees:

Costumes Ironing, Laundering, Restocking AND Ushers - Commitment to be present and work hard when scheduled as you are responsible for ironing and laundering costumes 5-8 times during show weeks as well as laundering post show, returning borrowed costumes, and restocking HPA costumes. Serve at least 1 barn cleaning day in summer. Provide an usher for 5 performances. 2-5 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed job description.

Show Week Committees Team - Committed people who are willing to work hard when scheduled are necessary for this team. Four families on this team can sign up to be leaders and fulfill their responsibility with only one adult. All other families will NEED at least 2 adults to fill 9 slots during show nights (there are only 6-7 shows so this requires at least 2 adults on some nights). Work together as a team to plan and carry out all responsibilities of concessions, flowers & candy, ushers and cast party. 8-12 parents needed per show. Staff Meals - Skills of thriftiness, cooking, and meal planning are needed to plan, cook, and serve staff meals during tech and show weeks. A budget of $500 is available for 12 days of serving 12-20 people per day. One person may do this for their entire commitment or 2 people may share it and also fill 5 usher slots each. 1-2 parents needed per show. Parents desiring to be committed to all evening tech rehearsals and shows should choose one of these committees:

Hair/Makeup Leadership - Artistic skills, a willingness to learn, and enjoyment of close interaction with students are required skills as you obtain and oversee creative vision from directors. Lead meetings with cast groups prior to final dress rehearsals to prepare cast for hair and makeup needs. Order supplies and plan strike. 1 parent needed per show. Orchestra - Accomplished musician to rehearse weekly during months prior to show, play during all dress rehearsals and shows, and clean the orchestra pit after the show. 0-5 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed description.

Tech - Skills and experience in sound or lighting is preferred to run sound or light board the last 2-3 weeks of the production during all tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances. Parents desiring to work mostly from home AND during 5 show nights should choose one of the following committees:

Tickets - Detail oriented, basic computer (email & web), and customer service are necessary skills as you work at home at least one day per week for the 8 to 11 weeks leading up to show, as well as in the box office most of the performances. Confidence in working with web-based software such as Google documents is necessary. A reliable internet connection at home is also necessary. Good people/telephone skills are very helpful. 4-5 parents needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed description.

Ad Assistant - Written communication, email, internet, spreadsheets are skills required to work via internet from home very closely with the ad sales manager to track receipt of payments and artwork, help maintain detailed records, and communicate via email and phone with cast families and business supporters. May also be needed to serve 5 show nights with ushers, box office, or similar. 1 parent needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed description.

Attendance Coordinator - Web forms, Written communication, Detail-oriented, Spreadsheets are skills needed for work via internet from home to receive online absence requests, communicate requests to the directors, communicate response to the family, and track all absences in a detailed spreadsheet. May also be needed to serve 5 show nights with ushers, box office, or similar. 1 parent needed per show. If interested, make sure to view the detailed description.

Parents desiring to usher 3 shows and pay us to fill the remainder of the commitment should choose the following committee:

Committee Buy Out - Pay a $500 non-family commitment fee AND provide someone to usher or help with flowers and candy on 3 performance nights. No more than 5 parents per show may choose this option.
