POETRY
Grades 10, 11, 12 * .50 Credit * Career Zone: AC
Prerequisite: 1 year of English credit (similar to science general electives)
This course is designed as a full immersion study of the genre of
poetry. Students will study a complete range of the world's poets, from ancient and traditional to modern and experimental. Students will learn techniques of poetry analysis displayed through essay writing and oral presentations. An academic research project will be conducted by each student, revolving around study of one prominent poet. The creative component of the class includes regular student poetry writing based upon studied techniques and models. Students will individually create and publish their own chapbooks, as well as participate in a class publication. A significant goal of the class is to increase students’ general sensitivity to the subtleties and power of language.
