Grades 10, 11, 12 * .50 Credit * Career Zone: AC
Prerequisite: 1 year of English credit (similar to science general electives)
In Science Fiction & Fantasy you will learn the history of both the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres. For Science Fiction, we will look at the origins of the genre, including the representation of Science Fiction in television shows such as The Twilight Zone, short stories by icons of the genre such as Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov, and movies such as Gattaca and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The Fantasy portion of the class will include reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, or Bonesmith by Nicki Pau Preto, discussing world building and other elements of the Fantasy genre, and looking at the differences between low and high fantasy. This portion of the class may also include watching television shows and movies related to the genre. Throughout the class, students should expect to hold discussions with their peers, analyze both the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres in writing, write creatively, and think critically about the concepts presented throughout the course. This class is for fans of fantasy and science fiction whether that be books, films, or television shows as well as anyone who would like to learn more about both genres.
