I am a wildlife veterinarian and epidemiologist with a DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and a PhD from the University of Florida (UF). After completing a residency in zoological and wildlife medicine at the UF, I became a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) in 1998. I am currently the immediate past president of the ACZM, veterinary advisor for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) jaguar SSP, chair of the AZA animal health committee, a member of the IUCN wildlife health specialist group, and an associate editor for the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. I have conducted conservation and research projects in over 30 countries within the Americas, Asia, and Africa. This research includes a health-monitoring program for gorillas in central Africa, health assessments of sea turtles in Africa and the Americas, veterinary support and health studies of maned wolves in Bolivia, health care of elephants in Myanmar, and avian health studies in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. My interests in wildlife veterinary medicine focus on the spread of diseases between domestic animals and wildlife and the health impact of environmental changes and human contact on animals in the wild. My research is directed at finding answers to the disease challenges that threaten wildlife conservation, public health and ecosystem sustainability with the goal of these answers leading to conservation action. During my veterinary career I have been fortunate to work as a clinician, epidemiologist, and field veterinarian. Before joining the staff at the Saint Louis Zoo in 2007, I worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society (1997-2002) and the Smithsonian National Zoo (2002-2007). I have a special fondness for elephants, sea turtles and jaguars!

"Description : Abstract: The Field Veterinary Program (FVP) of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) was created in 1989 to combat the wildlife disease and health problems that increasingly complicate the process of wildlife conservation. The FVP provides veterinary services for the more than 300 WCS conservation projects located in more than 50 countries around the world. Most of these projects are in tropical regions and many have a wildlife/domestic livestock component. Wildlife health care provided by the FVP staff includes (1) identifying critical health factors; (2) monitoring health status; (3) crisis intervention; (4) developing and applying new technologies; (5) animal handling and welfare concerns; and (6) training. Additionally, the staff of the FVP give expert advice to many governmental and non‐governmental agencies that are involved in setting policies directly related to wildlife health and conservation issues.
