That year, Yang Lan, who had just graduated from university, partnered with comedian Jiang Kun to host for a year, but the ratings declined steadily. When life and death were at stake, Yang Lan thought of Zhao Zhongxiang. She hoped that Zhao Zhongxiang could go out in danger and host "Zhengda Variety Show" with herself.

After Yang Lan's long-term soft grinding and hard soaking, Zhao Zhongxiang started the 66th program on July 28, 1991 and stood on the host seat of "Zhengda Variety Show". The wonderful life of his later years

Some people think that Zhao Zhongxiang is the oldest host in China and should retire. In Zhao Zhongxiang's eyes, age is nothing at all, as long as he survives, he will fight. He said: “I’m not too old to say that I’m old. There are many presenters abroad who are nearly 90 years old and are still hosting. I’ve just reached seventy, and my life is scarce in seventy years, but there are more entertainers of this age I am alone."

In December 2018, Zhao Zhongxiang commented and recorded the final piece of "Man and Nature". According to the staff, before that, Zhao Zhongxiang recorded more than 3 consecutive hours each time, with 4 episodes in one recording. It is very admirable that he can maintain such a tone in his seventies.

In addition to hosting and cultivating talents, Zhao Zhongxiang also writes books, publishes collections of poems, walks the dog, draws, collects antiques, buys food and cooks with his wife. He said: "People are getting older and older, and the life they are pursuing becomes more plain."

However, Zhao Zhongxiang has also encountered a lot of controversy after retirement, but he is very indifferent: "I rarely go to those things on the Internet. Note that I basically don’t use the Internet. As long as I say something wrong, I’ll definitely change it. If it’s right, I must stick to my point of view.” For a generation of Chinese audiences, Zhao Zhongxiang seems to represent an age of hosting. In the era without the Internet, he left an unforgettable voice. He is a national idol and a national face.

This year is his 61st year in the industry, but he has left forever. He once said: "I'm just a scholar, and my only wish is to better contribute my meager strength to the TV career, and this life will remain the same." However, his important significance in the development of Chinese television cannot be ignored. As he stated in his book: "It is impossible to erase my symbol, because it is the mark of an era."

"He has taught me so much! The friendship of our two families lasted more than 30 years. Mr. Zhao, thank you for all of your guidance," Yang added.
