A disaster response coordinator for a charity would need to know what effects to expect and what methods there are that can be used to manage them and which would be more effective in certain areas.

Someone who works for the Environment Agency would need to understand why river’s flood and what methods could be used to manage them.
Year 8
Rainforest issues
A Conservationist working for an NGO would need to know why rainforests are being cleared and what measures there are for protecting the rainforests
Globalisation and development
Someone working for an international company such as Microsoft, with operations in many different countries would need to understand how their actions could have an impact on different communities and their cultures.
Managing the hazards from Volcanoes
A volcanologist would need to know about plate movement and the different ways that a volcano can erupt and how that might impact people.
Someone working for a computer software company that develop GIS to map and help with disaster response would need to understand about volcanoes and their impacts.
A sustainable tourism manager/operator would need to know the biodiversity impacts of such activities (positive and negative) and assess the benefits for the local communities. This is liked to our tropical rainforests topic.
Year 9
Tectonic hazards
Volcanologist, In the GCSE topic of tectonic hazards we cover prediction, protection, planning and monitoring. We look at what instruments they use, what data needs to be collected and the importance of this.

Year 10
Challenges of urban living
Architects would benefit from elements in this unit on sustainable cities. It is important for students to assess what makes a city sustainable and by using examples such as BedZed students can see that small details can make a difference e.g. having windows south facing can make a difference.

Someone who works for the Environment Agency would need to understand why river’s flood and what methods could be used to manage them.
Loss adjusters in the insurance industry would also need to fully understand flooding, effects and management in order to help customers mitigate against further losses.
Year 11
Changing economic world
Town/Infrastructure planning would be helped by knowledge of the importance of upgrading our transport system such as HS2 and smart motorways. Politicians should also have knowledge of how local economies can be impacted on by developments such as transport, regeneration schemes and new jobs in the quaternary sector such as research and technology for example working at a science park.
Year 12
Field Studies Council representative would need the experience of having conducted field work and using tools to analyse data which are skills gained through geography field work.
Marketing and market research analyst, would need to be able to interpret data in a variety of different forms; all skills that geographers develop over the course.
Catastrophe Risk Analyst would need to be able to assess different types of disasters and their impacts on different areas of the world using models studied in geography such as the PAR model. Hazard Response Cycle and hazard profiles.
Year 13
Climate change analyst, we use lots of models and predictions to assess changes over time including future predictions as to the impact of climate change. Students need to evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of different models and data and understand the uncertainties.
International development agency worker would need to understand about impacts of TNCs and policies such as Structural Adjustment Policies on HIPs, which are areas studied in human geography.
