Message from the Headteacher
A big thank you to 6S today, who delivered a fantastic assembly on World War II and how it has shaped the country we live in today. It was a wonderful way to see their learning brought to life and we are looking forward to the other class assemblies this term to see what else has been happening across the school.
We also welcomed our Phonics Consultant into school this week to look closely at how we teach phonics. These visits are an important part of ensuring that the teaching children receive is consistently high-quality, as reading is such a vital life skill.
Alongside this, all staff are undergoing Restorative Justice training, and we were pleased to host a parent information session this week. Thank you to those parents who attended and shared how useful they found the strategies for building strong relationships and restoring them when mistakes are made. This focus is also being reflected in our assemblies, where we have been discussing the importance of a strong growth mindset. Just as a growth mindset helps us to persevere and learn from challenges, restorative justice reminds us that mistakes are part of life – what matters is how we repair and move forward.
Finally, congratulations to all the children who have been awarded pupil leadership roles this term, we will be announcing these next week in this newsletter. We are very proud of you and are excited to see the positive impact you will have on our school community.

6S Class Assembly
6S kicked off our class assemblies for the academic year with an excellent first assembly. Their presentation reflected their learning in history about World War II, focusing on the evacuation of children to rural areas of the UK. While evacuation helped keep children safe during the war, it often meant families were separated, which was very difficult for many.
During the assembly, the children shared key facts about World War II, including that the war lasted from 1939 to 1945, many children were evacuated from cities to the countryside to protect them from bombing, people experienced food rationing and other restrictions, and the war had a huge impact on everyday life, including schools, homes, and communities.
A huge thank you to all the children in 6S for learning their lines and speaking so clearly. We are also very grateful to the parents who attended to support the children—it was wonderful to see so many of you there.
Reception Take a Tasty Trip Around the World!
As part of our Our World topic, Reception have been busy learning about the UK and exploring other countries around the globe.
This week, we travelled (in spirit!) to India. The children were fascinated to discover the similarities and differences between India and our own home. A real highlight was tasting some delicious traditional foods – pani puri. The children showed such enthusiasm for trying new flavours and absolutely loved this hands-on way of exploring different cultures!

Please be reminded the SCOPay booking system for parents' evening appointments will go live this evening (Friday 3rd October) at 6pm.
If you have not signed up to the SCOPay app yet, a notification with a Link Code and instructions to register, will be resent to you today.
Please register as soon as possible so that you can book your appointments. Bookings will be open until Thursday 16th October, 11.45pm. After this time you will not be able to book an appointment on the system.
Parents' Evening for all year groups from Nursery to Year 6 will be taking place over two days:
Tuesday 21st October: 3.30pm to 6pm
Wednesday 22nd October: 3.30pm to 7pm
Please choose whichever day is convenient for you.
You will have a ten minute appointment with your child's teacher which you must book in advance via the SCOPay app.
Parent Governor Nominations deadline
Parent Governor Nominations deadline
The deadline for nominations for the Parent Governor vacancy is fast approaching: 12 noon on Tuesday 7th October 2025.
If you're interested, please return your nomination form to the school office before the deadline. If you need another form, these are available from the office. You can nominate yourself or another parent/carer.
Parent Governors play a vital strategic role in supporting the school’s development, helping to shape its direction, oversee finances, and hold the leadership team to account.
We’re especially keen to hear from parents with experience in Marketing or Finance, though all skills are welcome. No previous experience is needed—full training is provided, and you’ll always work as part of a team.
All nominees must attend a short meeting at 5.30pm on Thursday 9th October with Mrs Appelby and Chair of Governors, Mrs Plummer to learn more about the role.

Nut-Free School Reminder - Important
We’d like to remind all families that Horsenden Primary School is a strictly nut-free school. This means no products containing nuts or nut traces should be brought in, including peanut butter, chocolate spreads with hazelnuts, and snacks with nut ingredients.
Bringing items like chocolate spreads or other nut-based products into school, even unknowingly, can put children with severe allergies at serious risk. Even tiny traces of nuts left on hands, tables, or packaging can cause serious allergic reactions in some pupils.
Some of our children have extreme nut allergies, and their safety relies on everyone’s vigilance.
Please always check ingredient labels carefully when packing lunchboxes or snacks. If a product contains nuts or may contain traces, do not send it to school.
