Living by our Christian Values: Together in Faith, Hope and Love

17th June 2022 : Newsletter 34

So, Summer has finally decided to make an appearance - and what a great week it has been in the sunshine. Rehearsals for Joseph are in full flow, sports day practice is ramping up and today we held our second School Mass of the year for Pentecost. Lead by Fr Christopher, pupils in Class 1 read prayers, Class 2 sang a beautiful song for Communion and Class 3 read with confidence and compassion. The congregation were very complimentary and we look forward to our Harvest Mass in Autumn.

Don't forget, next week is Wellbeing Week, so it's sports kit all round. This weather looks like it may continue, so don't forget to lather the sun cream on - the aroma of summer holidays has been everywhere today!

Have a great weekend and enjoy this glorious weather!

Circular Fashion Show!

Class 3 will be holding a fashion show to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the fashion industry. This event will be on Tuesday, 5th July 2022 at 2.30pm. Our goal is to remove the great mass of discarded clothes that are sent to landfills all over the world. Many students of the school will be participating in this event.

We are asking for good, quality children's clothes or shoes that have been grown out of or that you no longer need. These clothes will be modelled and sold as part of our event . Any donations need to be clean and in good condition.

Please bring your second hand clothing, in sizes age 3-14, to school between 20th June - 1st of July.

The Great Science Share

It was wonderful to welcome parents in to school to celebrate The Great Science Share!

The children had a brilliant time sharing their scientific enquiries with the whole school community and gained lots of valuable skills whilst doing so.

The children confidently explained their science learning to each other and their parents.

Foundation Stage

It was time to meet Supertato this week. He came alive and the children asked him lots of questions. Henry asked, "do you have a super ability?" Supertato told us that he was very strong. He proved it by lifting up the storybox! George said, "I think he can pick up tyres!" Allanah found out that he was super fast and he could fly.

Supertato asked us if we could help him stop Evil pea from getting away. We have been kept very busy, because Evil pea has escaped and hidden somewhere new in Foundation every day this week. This morning, Zoe found him in the washing machine! A few children have played with Evil pea and made him a playground and ball pool so that he won't try to escape again. We have completed lots of Supertato activities too which has included painting evil pea and Supertato, estimating how many peas in the jar and writing who am I clues.

Class 1

This week, Class 1 have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes in maths. We have explored the shapes in groups, sorting them and investigating how many sides, vertices, faces and edges they have. I wonder how many different shapes they can find at home? Year 2 recorded their knowledge into a table and everyone attempted to draw the shapes. The 3D shapes were very tricky but everyone had a go. We are trying to be very careful with our drawings, making sure we use a ruler if we need to and colouring objects in super carefully.

In Forest School, alongside all the usual activities, the children enjoyed making fat balls for birds to feed on. The children enjoyed mixing the ingredients together then used their hands to shape the balls. I'm sure the birds will appreciate their efforts.

Class 2

It's over a week ago that Class 2 Set off on their Residential visit to York. What an amazing trip it was too! They spent most of their first day transforming into and spending a day in the life a Viking. They took orders from the Lord of the Village and worked the land to help with farming. On Friday, after a beautiful walk along the river, the children continued their Viking adventure and explored the Jorvik centre, followed by a picnic on the grass and finished off with a visit to the Astro Campus at the University of York to experience some 'real life' science.

Class 3

On Monday, Class 3 took part in an art workshop in preparation for Horbury Platinum Parade. The children were challenged to create something that has been important in Horbury Bridge over the last 70 years. During this time, the textile mill industry was very important and, even through there are no mills remaining today, they are an important part of our history.

Using bamboo and tissue paper, the children created 5 large mill buildings that will be a part of the parade. All children are welcome to take part in the parade and carry their mill buildings through the streets of Horbury to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee! The Parade will take place on Sunday 26th June from 3:30pm – 4pm at the end of the show, with a short finale showcase at the end where the children can show everyone their work.
