BMW 507 serial #70054 with motor #40068, is a full series 2 with a cast aluminum dashboard and fuel tank in the trunk. The build plate is stamped 1958. Two other cars we own have higher serial numbers and show 1957 on their build plates. We do not know why this car was held back by the factory until 1958.

The car’s original body color was cream, with a brown and tan interior. There is evidence that the top was brown with tan Herringbone inside. It was equipped originally with just a soft top (no hard top or mounting points for a hard top). It also had a Becker Mexico radio with power Hirschmann antenna and Rudge knock-off wheels. The wheels were not on the car when our family took possession in 1971. We speculate that the wheels were removed by a previous owner after they were installed incorrectly (there was a deep flat spot on the right front brake drum). The brake drum has been subsequently replaced.

We have a full set of original Rudge knock-off wheels, that we sourced through the purchase of a BMW 503, as well as a hard top from another 507 that can be fitted to the car, if desired. These are included in the sale of #70054.

The car was acquired by Herman Bold in 1971. We do not know who the first owner of this car was, but Herman bought it from John Hansbury, a college professor at Southeastern Massachusetts University. He was originally from Texas but was living in Rhode Island at the time. After Herman acquired the car, the original engine was exchanged with another rebuilt 507 engine because the original needed repair. The original engine #40068 has been in storage ever since. #40068 will be sold with the car, but the replacement engine will not be included in the sale of the car.

The car was used for many years by Herman, but was put into storage about 25 years ago as he was aging and no longer felt comfortable driving it. It was a great running car, but over time it started to show its age as the paint on the left side front fender and the right side rear fender began to blister. Those areas had been damaged while in the possession of a previous owner and the repairs using oxyacetylene and flux were not done well. These issues are being addressed by the shop currently working on the car.

The repairs to car #70054 began about five years ago. Alex, Herman’s son, began a "frame up" restoration and hired Harry Tidmarsh’s shop to do the body work. The new fenders were begun, but Harry passed away before he was able to complete the job. The Bold Family is now in the process of continuing the restoration at another reputable local company. The car is also being evaluated for any additional work that needs to be done.

Over the years, many family acquaintances and business associates have expressed interest in owning the car. The Bold Family never intended to sell the car, but considering the increasing amounts being offered, we have reconsidered and are now willing to let it go. The offers that have already been received are to purchase the car in "as is" condition, so that the final restoration is in the purchaser’s control, with interior and exterior color combinations and any other details of their choice. To our knowledge, all other 507s have been accounted for and have already either been modified/restored, or are in the process of restoration. This is possibly one of the last remaining cars left of this original integrity and availability. It is a “blank canvas” for the new owner to make into whatever they desire.

We intend to have a privately run blind auction where interested individuals can submit their best offer to our attorney and the highest bid will purchase the car. We are in the process of finalizing the auction details (deadline for bids, etc.), so please contact us (abold@boldprecision.com) to let us know of your interest. Once we have set up the specific auction details, we will notify you.

For potential buyers, the car will be made available for inspection upon request. We will arrange these inspections with the facility where the car is located. Any questions pertaining to the car or the auction, please contact me directly (abold@boldprecision.com or 610-933-2653).

We have a standing offer of $1.7 million.

- Albert Bold
