About Me
Hi! My name is Johanna Becker and I'm very excited to be teaching music here at Holy Trinity. I am also currently teaching music part time at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Long Prairie. Music has always been an important part of my life. I have an Associates in Music as well as a lot of different experiences, including playing and singing for weddings and funerals and leading Sunday mass music, both in a solo situation or in an ensemble setting. My goal is to bring the joy and creative outlet of music into our everyday lives here at Holy Trinity. Music can also speak to us in a unique way about God and my desire is that we will all be able to grow closer to him as we experience his wonderful creation!
Overview
This year is going to be so amazing as we grow and experience music together. We are going to have fun singing, playing instruments, discovering how music is written down and learning about all the ways it is created and celebrated around the world. Below you will find a basic overview of what we will be exploring in each grade level. If you have any questions please contact me!
ECE
In ECE we will be learning to listen for if the music is fast or slow, loud or quiet, smooth or separated. We will also begin to show if it has high, medium or low sounds and if they are long or short. Here we will also begin to learn how to keep a steady beat.
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten we will learn to show when music goes up, down or stays the same as well as when there is a beat and when there isn't. We will also explore the different types of voices we use in music and some of the simpler instruments.
1st Grade
In 1st Grade we will begin to learn about mi, so and la in our solfege singing. This is when we learn about one sound or two (Quarter notes and Eighth notes) and no sound on a beat (Quarter note rest). We will also listen and move to simple musical phrases and tell when they are the same or different. We'll continue to explore different instruments.
2nd Grade
In 2nd Grade we will add do and re to our solfege syllables and begin to learn some simple patterns with them. We will learn about beats in groups of 2, 3 and 4 (time signatures), as well as Half and Whole Notes and Half and Whole Rests. We will also begin to use and identify basic tempos and dynamics.
3rd Grade
3rd Grade will add new solfege syllables, rhythms, tempos and dynamics. We will learn about musical forms including ABA, AABA, rondo, theme and variations and verse/chorus formats. We are also going to learn about the instrument families in the orchestra: woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion. We will be learning and using repeat signs and 1st and 2nd endings. 3rd Grade will also begin to learn how to play the recorder.
4th Grade
In 4th Grade we will begin to learn reading and writing notes in the Treble Clef. We will learn more complex rhythms that include Sixteenth notes as well learn and use new musical terms such as D.S., D.C., coda, fine and ostinato. In 4th Grade we will continue to learn how to play the recorder.
5th Grade and 6th Grade
5th and 6th Grade will be going to Pioneer Elementary to participate in band and choir.
