What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
As a person I have learned much from this internship, gaining extensive knowledge on urban gardening and conservation. I gained more confidence in my leadership skills, leading youth to build gardens around Worcester. Interpersonal skills as well as connecting our organization with others to increase our network. Race + Racial Equity training was required before the internship officially started that included 2 hours every wednesday for three weeks, this prepared us to interact with people with a better perspective as to how to respect them as they are.
How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I have come to understand what I would like to pursue in the future. I would like to pursue a career here in Worcester after I graduate with the REC and or other opportunities that I have found throughout this summer. Afterwards I would like to get my masters in environmental urban planning. This plan came about during my time with Youthgrow while I was considering what I enjoy the most about my major. It turns out I enjoy working with the community and creating cleaner areas for lower income people as well as helping the BIPOC community face discrimination in America (specifically environmental racism).
What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
My advice to other Holy Cross students is to take the opportunity to work within the community, there are many nuances about Worcester that many are not aware of and may miss the charm of a growing city. In terms of finding the right internship, there is endless possibilities that are tailored for their interests. But making connections and talking to the people who have those same interests will guide them to the right place to intern.
