What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
I developed my Oral and Written Communication the most during this
experience; especially over the phone. I often explained financial resources,
mental health programs and other opportunities to patients and their loved ones,
as well as guided them to enroll based on their personal needs.
How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I hope to become a Genetic Counselor and this opportunity allowed me to
prepare for this field through my interactions with patients with chronic illness. I
was able to listen to patients going through this challenging experience and
support them in any way I could. Hearing the perspectives of patients is a
reminder the importance of caring for the whole person, not just their diagnosis.
What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
When picking an internship, choose something that truly speaks to you. Interning
with a non-profit provided me with a unique opportunity to see another side of
healthcare and work with people that are passionate about helping others through
a difficult time.
