What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
This role challenged me in many different ways. I am confident with my digital technology skills
regarding Microsoft Office and numerous other digital platforms commonly utilized by non-profit
organizations, including Raiser’s Edge. I am far more confident with my oral/written
communication skills and I believe I am able to represent myself and my role when around
coworkers and supervisors. Lastly, this experience has allowed me to learn more about career
management. That is, how best to voice the skills and experience I possess in a professional manner
when around other professionals in the workplace, during interviews, and when interacting with my
peers.
How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
My time with Make-A-Wish Connecticut allowed me to put into practice what I have been learning
in the classroom at Holy Cross as well as through the Certificate in Business Programs offered by
the Ciocca Center for Business, Ethics, and Society. There were highs as well as lows, but this
internship challenged my understand of marketing and communications and pushed me to think
creatively and look at the role in a way in which I never have before. I am grateful to be able to
continue interning for my organization this upcoming fall semester, and I hope this additional time
with Make-A-Wish will continue to help me as I find a career that best suits my skill sets and
interests within the fields of marketing and communications.
What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
For Holy Cross students who find themselves in an internship setting during the academic school
year or summer, I challenge them to set goals. Start of small at first, and then as you become more
comfortable with the position, challenge yourself and set goals that push you outside of your
comfort zone in order to make the most of your internship. Goal setting can be done on your own,
but I also highly encourage setting goals for the internship with your supervisor, as they can hold
you accountable and suggest what works best for you and the role.
