What Are Some Skills/Competencies That You Developed During Your Internship?
Interning under remote conditions this Summer drastically improved my communication and critical thinking skills. Because I didn’t have my supervisors in close physical proximity, I really had to work on reaching out efficiently and professionally in case problems arose. Furthermore, in times when I was left to my own devices due to the seclusion of a remote internship, it was necessary for me to employ and practice my critical thinking skills to make sure that I was effectively fulfilling my tasks. This also comes with working at a publication where news and information must be processed and published within a limited time frame.
How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
The skills that I developed interning at a publication this Summer will be applied often and effectively as I continue to follow a journalism-focused career path. This Summer I was able to get a taste of what a journalistic working environment could look like as I got hands on experience working on a publication team. These skills of communication and critical thinking are essential for success in this sphere, and I am very grateful that I can take these with me as I chase similar roles.
What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
To my fellow Holy Cross students, I would say maintaining professionalism and making good first impressions are essential for your internship experience. This sets a good standard for a successful working relationship. I would also stress the importance of checking in with your supervisors about your work to make sure you are on the right track and fulfilling your duties effectively. This not only shows initiative but is a great way to track your progress.
