1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
During my time at Daybreak, I developed valuable skills in scientific communications, business fundamentals, web design and workplace teamwork.
I learned a great deal about business technology and web design, essentially by helping create an entire website from scratch. Beyond the aesthetics of a website’s design, there are many complexities behind the function of a company’s website. Who is the audience? How should they navigate the page? What info should we include?
I also learned to translate advanced scientific topics into simple text or graphics. Whether I was creating infographics for an investor pitch meeting or drafting emails to send to COVID-19 test patients, I learned to value both accuracy and brevity.
I learned the dynamics of a start-up and was able to observe and contribute to conversations surrounding business strategy. Through these high-level meetings, I expanded my skills in professionalism and teamwork.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I learned to use my studies in biology to help communicate science and connect it to business operations. With this, I gained assurance from my colleagues that there are countless positions in the workforce, from healthcare to pharmaceuticals, that are looking to hire scientifically-driven individuals that may not want to work in a lab or pursue medical school.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
Don’t be afraid to be creative with your career aspirations. No major ties you to a specific career path. Make sure you’re enjoying the work you are doing, don’t just do it because it’s the normal path or may seem the most stable. Also, keep connecting with people, LinkedIn is pretty cool!
