1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
I learned a great deal about online platforms that work within a company to make things more accurate and efficient. Some of these platforms included Slack, Salesforce, Jira, Slidebean, and Jotform. I practiced using these platforms almost daily and feel as though I unlocked an abundance of their potential. Surprisingly, I also gained more understanding in molecular biology, specifically in PCR, as I researched the mechanisms that allow the assay to work in addition to its applications in COVID-19 testing. Conducting research efficiently was another big skill I sharpened through this internship. I developed a workable list of trusted sources and did not waste to much time on any one specific site or topic, as most of the time I was on a deadline to present my findings.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I loved immersing myself in researching different vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 and the molecular biological systems that they are based in. This pushed me into considering careers rooted in research, specifically in the fields of virology, immunology and vaccine development. It has definitely pushed me towards strongly considering graduate school to achieve my goals of high level scientific research.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
Stay alert to the opportunities, internships and beyond, that Holy Cross sponsors or connects you to because they are always be there waiting to be utilized by students. This summer, my initial plans fell through due to the pandemic and it seemed as though I would be working a less than fulfilling occupation for months. However, Holy Cross launched a huge initiative on Handshake to connect students with alumni offering internship opportunities remotely. I stayed alert for opportunities at the beginning of the summer and it payed off through this great 2020 summer internship program.
