1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
I developed my research and organization skills by learning how to research many aspects of competitor companies and keeping track of my research in several spreadsheets. I also developed my presentation skills by creating slides that the company can present to investors. Additionally, using my research to inform the company’s decisions, I learned about strategic planning. Finally, I developed my communication and collaboration skills by adjusting to the remote working environment; instead of interacting with my co-workers on a daily basis, I learned to communicate effectively via email, text, Zoom, Slack, and phone call.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
Startups are unique in that they have so much potential to grow into something new that becomes very popular and/or changes the way the world works, and the employee roles are very interconnected and collaborative. After experiencing this first-hand as an intern this summer, I’ve become very interested in pursuing a career in business at a startup. As a biology major, I’d like to work in the biotech industry, in which there are hundreds of startups.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
Definitely do not be afraid to intern at a type of company that is completely new to you. I had never worked at a startup or a technology company before this summer, and it was an incredible experience. And ask questions when you don’t understand something - as an intern you aren’t expected to know everything beforehand, and you learn the most when you ask for help. Additionally, network with and get to know Holy Cross alumni! They are often willing to help you or at least have a conversation with you.
