1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
I now have a much stronger comprehension of immunology in general. I have worked through the scientific process in order to develop a hypothesis, design an experiment, and draw conclusions. I am able to comprehend scientific literature more fully and ask educated questions.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I am a pre-med student so I hope to attend medical school and eventually become a doctor. Therefore, it is imperative that I have research experience so that I am aware of groundbreaking changes in the field. Furthermore, I have been introduced to leaders of the medical field that are mentoring me towards a career in medicine.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
I found my internship by emailing lots of doctors and scientists, particularly graduates of Holy Cross. Even if they did not list a specific opening, many were willing to give advice and talk about their lab with me. By asking thoughtful questions and showing enthusiasm for the field, I was able to secure an internship in a lab that was not expecting to have an undergraduate for the summer! I always think that it is better to reach out because you will never know what opportunities that you will find.
