1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
Some skills and competencies I have further developed during my internship as critical thinking/problem solving, leadership, work ethic, and teamwork/collaboration. Working remotely has definitely helped me in further developing these skills. As Chief Clinical Research Intern for the UMass Psychotic Disorders Clinical & Research Program at UMass in the Department of Psychiatry, I have had the
opportunity to engage in critical thinking and problem solving skills at the clinical level. While designing virtual research projects I was able to put my problem solving and critical thinking skills to the test. Designing these virtual studies was a challenge as we had to balance and consider multiple factors given the current pandemic situation. I also had the opportunity to further my leadership skills as Chief intern, I was tasked with training and managing interns. My work ethic, teamwork, and collaboration skills have also progressed. Working remotely, there is always the challenge of staying on task. Fortunately, I was able to establish a good working schedule with my team members. Zoom calls offered a great platform for sharing ideas while working remotely, and we tried to simulate the in-office experience as much as possible.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
As an aspiring medical doctor, I have always had a deep interest and passion for pursuing a career in medicine. My experience working in psychiatry merged my major, psychology, with the field of medicine. Working in psychiatry has helped me decide exactly what I see myself doing in the near future. I cannot see myself doing anything other than working with those living with mental illness. Mental illness has long been ignored, and often not considered as serious as physical illness. Many cannot even begin to understand the life challenges accompanying mental illness. Individuals with mental illness are one of the most vulnerable populations, and require resources and support to manage their lifestyle. My passion for pursuing this career goal is stronger than ever as a result of my experience at UMass.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
Pursue your passions and your dreams. There is an internship out there suitable for you. It just takes patience and positivity to secure the position that is just right for you. Be your true self and do not let others, especially your higher ups, not allow you to express your ideas. Don’t give in, Don’t give up!
