1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed/honed during your internship?
An important skill that I developed during my internship was in oral communication through the art of the “hard ask.” In reaching out to supporters, we learned to craft our own personal story on why we were supporting Ed Markey. Instead of just making generic cold calls. building connections with who we were talking to.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
My experience on the campaign has led me to want to pursue careers in the political field. I want to help those running for office who I believe have stellar policy records and will help people, and help them win. This campaign worked alongside the consulting firm “Field First,” who helped out campaign with how to effectively reach out to volunteers, and taught us how to use political databases as well. After seeing what they’ve done, I would love to work at a consulting firm for campaigns one day.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
It may sound simple, but if I had any advice to give after this summer, it’d be to stay organized. I was only able to meet all of my goals and deadlines by sticking to my schedule. Another piece of advice was to never be afraid to ask for help. The campaign would not have been such a successful experience without both the aid of the Career Center.
