1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed/honed during your internship?
I developed skills in research, journalism, and communications, as I created various historical lessons on the Kennedys and then distilled them into a form that was informative but easy to read on social media. I have strengthened my awareness of social media technology while I compiled reports to document an increase in the Museum’s online reach. I have also honed my creative skills in my creation of engaging posts. Finally, I have had practice in independent work, presentation in a collaborative setting, and in leadership. I created, presented, and carried out most of the initiatives and scheduled programs that became the foundations of our social media presence.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
I intend to continue projects that incorporate history and research, probably independently or for a nonprofit, and the ability to communicate information from that research is invaluable. As an artist and someone who may one day work freelance in either literature or the arts, the ability to craft and market a strong media presence will also serve me well.
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
I would encourage Holy Cross students to pursue topics in which they have an interest, in either, both, or neither of their majors; there is a lot you can learn from working in a field that you may not have anticipated, and I have found that many of the foundational skills I have build from my experience in this internship can be used in more than one way in my others areas of interest. Work collaboratively whenever you can, but know too that your skill-set is unique and valuable, and never be afraid to share your ideas!
