1) What are some skills/competencies (NACE) that you developed during your internship?
Given that my internship was an editorial position, I can undoubtedly say that through continual proofreading and editing, I have become a more attentive reader and a better writer. However, given Open Road’s unique specialization in e-book publication and production, I gained many new technological skills that I would have otherwise not been so immersed in, such as proficiency in HTML and XML and confidence in utilizing applications such as Adobe InDesign, Excel, and Oxygen. The remote nature of my internship also allowed me to become more confident in advocating for myself, speaking up, and asking questions without fear, and fostered my growth personal accountability and independence.
2) How does this experience connect to your future career goals?
This experience has granted me an informed confidence how I envision my professional life ahead. I had an amazing experience this summer and feel that a future in the publishing industry is where I will thrive!
3) What advice would you give to other Holy Cross students?
My advice to any Holy Cross student, especially those who are unsure of what they want to pursue professionally, is to never say no to an opportunity, whether that be an opportunity to network, intern, shadow, learn, or even have a quick conversation. I would have never discovered my interest in publishing and digital literature production if it hadn’t been for diving into this opportunity instead of succumbing to uncertainty. Also, never be afraid to ask questions; asking questions is not an indication of ill intelligence, but rather is a method of opportunity for personal and professional growth. Never stop learning, being curious, reading, and asking questions!
