Over the past 2 months, I worked alongside Professor Basu providing an aiding hand on the Emotional Regulation project. The focus of the project is to gain a better understanding of the effects of environmental enrichment on the emotional regulation of laboratory mice. The significance or importance of such findings stems from the role lab mice serve as animal models to study neuropsychiatric disorders. The standard housing conditions of lab mice are minimal, and due to lack of stimulation could result in cognitive deficits and altered levels of anxiety. Such effects could limit the assessment of experimental manipulation due to floor and ceiling effects on the research outcome measures. While studies on environmental enrichment have been carried out before the effects have not been reproducible due to lack of standardization. Furthermore, most of the studies have neglected to look into the effects of environmental enrichment on female mice. Thus Prof. Basu’s lab has gone ahead and created an environmental enrichment protocol that uses widely accessible and common laboratory equipment.
