Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
With the weather change and the possibility of inclement weather effecting school, I want to highlight a procedural change for the 2020-21 school year. If school is shut down due to any unforeseen circumstances (inclement weather, electric outage, water outage, etc.), the district will offer Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days to allow students to continue with meaningful learning exercises during their time out. Student work will be collected and counted towards attendance, meaning that AMI days will not have to be made up at the end of the year.
AMI lessons will vary depending on the grade level and class of each student. AMI lessons will be a combination of enrichment, review and exploration topics. Some AMI lessons will be delivered virtually, but can be issued in packet form if children will not have access to technology. Please contact your child’s building office if technology or internet access will be an issue. We hope to resolve any issues prior to our first AMI day.
Teachers will begin discussing/distributing necessary materials in the upcoming weeks with their classrooms. If a teacher sends home AMI packets, please place those somewhere that can be easily found. Since AMI days are unplanned, AMI days will be announced on our school messenger system and on Facebook. A total of 6 AMI days can be used. Teachers will label their lessons accordingly (AMI 1, AMI 2, AMI 3, etc.). The district will announce which lesson the student should be on, in order of days missed. For example, the first “snow day” will be announced as “AMI 1”. Students will access their AMI 1 lesson for each class and complete for attendance.
The AMI plan allows for continuous learning during emergency situations. Please feel free to contact your building’s office with any questions or concerns. AMI materials will be posted and distributed in the upcoming weeks. Please be sure to communicate any problems or obstacles that you think could hinder your child’s ability to complete AMI lessons.
Sincerely,
Dustin Ferguson
Superintendent, Holcomb R-III School District
