NORTH HARBOUR SCHOOL ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS TRACK AND FIELD EVENT
A selected team of 11 students represented Hobsonville Point at the North Harbour Secondary School Zone Championships Track and Field event at AUT Millennium on Wednesday 15th March. Our top athletics students attending the North Harbour Championships in the hope they'd qualify for the Auckland Athletics Championships at Mt Smart Stadium next week on the 21st March.
Stella Sheriff was the most impressive Junior girl on the day finishing 13th in the 200m with a time of (31.20) only to finish .70 seconds outside the qualifying time. Unfortunately it was a similar story for Stella in the 100m, her time of (14.94) was only .53 seconds off earning herself a spot in the final. Stella also competed in the Long Jump finishing 15th. A first strong showing from our Junior.
The Intermediate Boys grade had three students that stood out from the rest of the team. Jalen Wilson was our strongest overall athlete, in the 1500m Jalen managed to crack the 5 minute mark with a time of (4:59.03) placing him 11th in that field. A win in his 400m heat with a time of (58.40) was good enough for a top 8 finish. Finally, his strongest event on the day came in the Long Jump event where he jumped (5.30m), to finish 8th overall with an improvement of 75cm from his previous PB.
Cavan McEwan was our strongest jumper on the day with a height of (1.60m). This result saw him finish inside the top 3 of the North Harbour field. Cavan was very unfortunate on his last jump of (1.65m) as he slightly touched the bar on his way down. Ale Latu was the strongest in the throwing events for the boys competing in Javelin, Discus and Shotpt . In Discus, Ale finished inside the top 5 with a throw of (29.07m). He showed out in the Shot Put event with a throw of (11.15m) placing him 2nd in the North Harbour Zone. Cavan and Ale patiently await their confirmation for a spot in the Auckland Champs next week.
Auckland Representative, Savannah Scheen once again showed her class and proved to much for her opponents winning the Intermediate Javelin with a new PB of (39.69m), The result placing her 1st in the among the entire Auckland region for the Intermediate Girls grade. Savannah didn't stop there as she finished 2nd in Discus with a distance of (33.89m) and also a very respectable 4th place finish in Shot Put with a throw of (10.90m). All results putting her in a great position for Auckland Athletics Championships next week.
Thank you to Tome Chan-Chui and John Wilson for the transport, support and photos from the awesome day.
